I just returned my FD7... very similar to Rockwell's take. I think it's the beryllium. I had almost the same reaction with the Focal Stellia. They were both a little too thin, not lush. Bass also not hard hitting on both...

Was it the same with the bass filter for you?

It's hanging by a thread on my tier 2 list now too. Sounds like its not for me either.
@chickenmoon, How does the FD7 compare to the 7Hz? I was interested in both. I love the Turii, and was looking for a DD with a bit more sub bass that doesn't have highly energetic upper mids and treble.

I personally didn’t even tried the FD7 with the bass filter as Balanced or Treble filters gave me more than enough low ends but ymmv. Having owned and loved the Focal Utopia for 2 years, I basically clicked with the FD7 moment I put it on with its ample dynamic range and unique berry timbre.

You'll sure have more sub-bass with the FD7 than with the Turii for sure and it's less forward in upper-mids/lower-treble too so it might fit your bill. I haven't listened to the Timeless in about a week so take with a grain of salt: Both FD7 and Timeless go quite deep and are sub-dominated but Timeless bass is softer and less impactfull. FD7 might lack some zing while Timeless might have a bit too much (but I get used t0 the latter better than the former). Overall I felt when listening to the Timeless it was working good on everything and would regard it as a bread and butter tuning unlike the FD7. I didn't pit the Timeless against the Turii at the time however.

Awesome. Thank you.

Totally forgot to send you tuning filters lol.

I went to check the original fiio box and confirmed that I sent you FD7 with treble filters pre installed.

For my classical music library, treble enhanced filters worked great, but they are probably suboptimal for your music genres.

I will put these in a mail tomorrow or Tuesday if you want to try.

Please do, assuming you're in no rush for me to be done with them.

Edit: @tgx78 I'll try and send you Dorado tomorrow.

Holy crap this is exactly how I hear the two-- FD7 feels more present in the mid-bass, with a rolled off sub-bass relative to the Reborn. That 2K bump is exactly where I EQ Reborn down and the ~150 region is precisely where I EQ it up. I'm coming to find that my overall perception of mids/bass etc. is just as much about how they play off other areas of the FR as where they are specifically.

At about 100+ hours I feel FD7 lacks some air, treble extension, having a somewhat muted/deadened character up top. Lower mids aren't the thickest but they are by no means thin. I feel this a warm, bass-dominated earphone. Bass goes deep and is significantly more sub than mid focused to my ears and should please sub-bassheads freaks as it's very well defined and epic sounding without becoming painful in bass dominated genres. I feel accuracy isn't really its forte and would classify it as a fun, genre specific IEM so far.

Wow my own impressions could not be more different. YMMV and all that.

Edit: sorry I thought I was in the FD7 thread.

No apologies all welcome here :)

Cheers man that's the aim-- a come one come all thread with no orthodoxy or pretence and a love of philosophy, banter and gear at all price tiers.

Fiio FD7

Caveat: These impressions are based off the limited time I've been able to devote to the FD7 over the past few days and are of course subject to my own preferences, biases etc.

For the last few days I've had these generously on loan from @tgx78. The first thing one notices is a tremendous sense of air, spaciousness & clarity top. There is a nice sense of "3dness" to the headspace and detail & nuance just jump out at you. These excel in terms of technicalities & resolution, at least in the top half of the FR. Female vocals are lush, natural and seductive. Another plus for me is that the upper mids/lower treble, though perhaps bordering on being a bit too crisp/vibrant at times are never fatiguing, shouty or anything like that.

Where this set doesn't quite work for me is in the lower half of the FR. While there is a tremendous amount of detail/clarity/resolution etc. up top I feel it achieves this by selling short the lower mids & bass at times-- I often found myself craving more density, dynamics, body & extension down low. Where female vocals were wonderful on the FD7, male vocals were pushed back a wee bit. Jumping over to the Oriolus Reborn, by no means a bassy earphone, and one which I tend to EQ the mid-bass up and the upper mids down, I find it nonetheless has a much more satisfying native sub-bass response than the FD7. The net result of this is that, while in terms of raw detail & resolution up top the FD7 is indeed comparable to something like the Elysium but imho the signature is too cold and clinical on the whole and for me lacks the vibrance, vitality and organic je-ne-sais quoi of Elysium's sound. The top end feels very present and clear, but it doesn't quite have the life & breath that Ely had up top and the emotive pull of the sound as a whole. I would also say that it doesn't have the warmth and emotive factor of something like the Oriolus Isabellae though it likely does excel that IEM in terms of raw technicalities. When I put the Isabellae in my ears for the first time I was immediately swept off my feet and couldn't wait to look through my library to find all sorts of stuff to try-- while the FD7 is certainly impressive it did not give me a similar experience. More clinical is probably the best way to describe it and I'm someone whose bias is strongly towards the emotive. YMMV, and all that.

In a nutshell: there is greatness here, but the signature is too skewed towards the upper half of the FR for me and on the whole didn't give me the sort of emotional engagement I crave with an earphone. It's interesting that I often associate emotional connection with DDs intrinsically but my experience with the FD7 on this front was almost completely the opposite with the Audiosense DT600, which has 6 BAs and no DD at all.

These impressions were based off my listening library which includes a lot of Dire Straits, CCR, mid-bass heavy techno, Morcheeba etc. and does not contain a lot of classical, string instruments etc. so take that for what it's worth.

Thanks for the impressions. I'm really looking forward to hearing these as the DT600 really did not work for me at all.

If these VE tour units don't come soon and I don't wind up jumping on one of CFA's novel releases this week I'm going to jump on the next used IE900 that comes up just to satisfy my curiosity.

In other news, and I myself need to try to do this more, but when people make statements like "X is the best single DD out there" they should be qualifying that statement with what sort of sound they like and why feel the piece in question is the best. Isa, Turii and IE900 are 3 of the preeminent single DDs out there and I've heard each of touted as "the single DD to beat" right now. I've read enough about each by now to get the sense that they're all jacks of different trades and may even ideally compliment each other-- ie., each seems to excel at its own thing and it's no really fair to make blanket statements like one is better than the other in any absolute sense because everyone of them has strengths the others do not. That's my mini rant of the day.

And while I'm here, loving this album tonight on Isa - perfectly suited.

I can say The Rhapsodio Eden is my favorite. I agree that blanket statements are usually emotional attachments coming forth from the user and that backing it up with why one believes that would only benefit the community :) Eden is my favorite but I can't say its the best because I have not heard them all. I can only speak from the experience I have had with the three I have tried and with my music library. So many subjective factors involved. Any impression or review that implies "the best" I would definitely take with a grain of salt as well.
