Someone in the Verite Open thread asked for comparisons between the A20 and the V281 and I'd also be very interested in any comparisons between the A20 and any of the Violectric lineup. I had pretty much decided on the V202 as my next amp but with all this talk of the A20 it has me wondering if there's areas it clearly falls short compared to the Violectric or if it could be an equally good choice

I was at canjam and bought a v226 because I absolutely loved how it sound with atrium opens. The warmer sounding amps sound incredible and is fun pairing.

• A20 is single-ended, has output impedance of 100 ohms, delivers 100 mw into 600 ohms. It has a light sweetness to its sound: clearly not cool, sterile. For me, an ideal SS substitute to give the OTL Woo Audio WA3 a rest from the duties of powering high-impedance headphones (usually with dynamic drivers).
• V281 has SE, XLR inputs & outputs, can deliver 2700 mw (or 40.2 volts) into 600 ohms. V281 output impedance is a mere 0.2 ohms (balanced mode). V281 sound, for me, is the right mix of tube liquidity / spatiality and solid-state mastery of transients. There is not a headphone (ZMF or otherwise) that sounds less than magnificent with V281.
• V281 is my favourite solid-state headphone amplifier, period. A20 is a great ‘special situation’ (high impedance) headphone amplifier.
I keep comparing the V281 to 2 other fine amps that occupy different levels on the SS amp food chain: the Wells Milo; and the Cavalli Liquid Carbon v2.
As good as those amps (and they are very good in their own ways), I always return to the V281, and it always feels like coming home.
