The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread
May 23, 2007 at 5:23 AM Post #481 of 2,080
Just wanted to chime in with my 580 love. I've had my pair since 1999! I believe I paid $150 or $180 for them new on eBay. They have been across the country with me on temporary jobs, used on subways, busses, at work, at school, in bed, playing games, used with 3 different amplifiers (a borrowed 1st gen Airhead, a Total Airhead [both rather disappointing], and now my new Hornet), banged around, and completely wonderful. The foam earpads are squished to my head shape and as soft as a pillow. I'm on my 3rd cable (this time the 650 cable), due to previous ones wearing out with age and wear and tear from all my travels and my getting them caught on things, etc.

I know there are better cans out there, but I have yet to hear them. The 580s will always have a special place in my heart.

Thanks for the answersss....but please ansewer to me punctually to the next questions because this week im buying something and i cant decide yet what to go for....

1) Do you think that Creek OBH SE 21 would drive better the 580 than the amp from 0404 USB?
2) Do you think that an externall DAC + a decent spdif signal would be better than the 0404 USB?
3) I have these options : 0404USB + 580 / 0404 internal+ OBH 21SE + DAC Rockna RD2 + 580. Which would you choose?
4) Are there big differences between the 2 options?

THANKS!

Nobody wants to help me

Unless you need the portability afforded by the 0404 USB, I vote for the 0404 PCI + Creek OBH-21 SE. The 0404 PCI is a well-renowned quality card and I don't believe it is trumped by its USB counterpart. The Creek is a true headphone amp and will drive the Senns (and most other phones) very well. It will more than likely trump the amp section of the 0404 USB.

Cheers!

I have the 650 cables and they do make a difference. It is not a great big difference but it is there. For $17 shipped they can't be beat.On that note another thing I have found is power cord cables do make a difference. I would not spend a lot but I have a jellyfish and a velux and I have found the jellyfish has opened up my soundstage on my SOHA amp. A standard computer cable does not compare at all. The velux opens the soundstage too but it is compressed on both ends compared to the jellyfish. I know this is not a power cord thread but I just wanted to give my 2 cents.

I'm looking for 600 grills for my friend's 580. They are no longer available on Senn USA's site. Anyone knows where else I can get them? Is it a temporary shortage or permanently gone? Thanks

I do believe the grills have to ordered over the phone.

I got my 580 today. And I am running them out of my soundcard Hercules Fortissimo 4. First of all the sound even in these conditions is way above my audio experience so far. They seem underpowered straight out the Forti 4. I didnt get the OBH 21SE because it seemed to metallic sounding for my ears. So...the sound definetly seems to be veiled and a bit harsh. Do you guys think that burning them in will solve that? Also im thiniking going for 0404USB... what do you think about it?

You definitely need to break the cans in! It will take some hours(100 at least) but you'll notice a big difference.I think the 0404 is a quite warm source that complement very well the 580s.

Ok, glad to hear that the USB is warm.
