The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread

Thanks to everyone in this forum for a sound description and advice - those v2 (flat plate + black paper) are just.. excellent. Once plugged in, the music simply becomes an intimate and special experience.
I sometimes prefer these even to the more analytical Jubilee. There is something beguiling about these that I don't believe the later versions have.

Took a bit better picture of my 580 with the custom "Fibonacci" grilles and a custom XLR balanced cable:

Hey fellow HD580 owners 👋

I need some cable help. I got a HD580 Jubilee last November and I have been enjoying it. It came with the stock HD650 cables I believe. The only issue I have with that cable is that it keeps touching my beard and it’s kinda annoying doing a listening session.

Any cable suggestion for the HD580 Jubilee? I don’t mind spending $$$ for some good cables as long as it’s loose (long Y) and is 2 meters at least.

Might be a bit late, but I got a cable from this UK-based guy on Ebay once, and it's really well made. There's no housing for the split, the braid just splits into twisted pairs naturally. Also the split section is longer than most of my other cables, it's very nice.

Any magical fibonacci musicality spice added? Looks pretty cool. Perhaps the CC copper donut would add an extra dimension, though I like the stealth look

These pesky little 580s still hanging around all these years later.

I really do like the original grills as well. Something about them... but those look nice as well

Not that I can tell. For fun I put the 6XX grilles on my 580 once and it sounded the same to me. I also can't really hear a difference with the grilles off and on so I guess I am the wrong person to ask. I can still hear up to 19000 in those online sound tests but not swapping Sennheiser grilles.

Oh yeah the 6XX with the 580 grilles also didn't sound any different to me.

I don't think I noticed too much of a difference either....

But 580 drivers in 660 shell I did like as it got more clamp. I also used new older style pads. They squish quite well with clamp.

But I like the old-school look so... Yeah XD

The 580 just has less hump in mid without shout... It still lives on all these years later and will probably be talked about 20 years on and beyond I bet :D

Got a pair of hd580s and they came with dead drivers. Tried contact cleaner on the pins but not sure what else to try. They aren't registering anything on the multimeter either :frowning2:
That's a shame... if all else fails you can swap out the drivers. It's pretty easy to do and you can just pop them out, much like the rest of the parts on the HD580s.

I have a pair of hd535s and hd545s but I'd hate to kill those. Plus id ideally like hd580 drivers. If anyone has half dead hd580, I'll buy um:)

The 580/600 drivers are the same, you can buy a pair of 600 drivers and swap them in yourself. Or you can do what I did back in the day and buy 650 drivers and put them in the 580 housing just to be different lol.

Sounds interesting. If i ever find a pair of any 6xx style headphones with in terrible shape, but good drivers, I'll do the swap!

If you contact Sennheiser they should be able to sell you replacement drivers.

I went to my first Head-Fi meetup ever on Saturday and was happy to see multiple people recognize the HD580, I had one person listen to them for about 20 minutes even tho they had all the other headphones in my sig available too them.

The 580 drivers in the earlier phase differ from the later ones. So 600 drivers in the 580 chassis would sound closer to the later versions. I've gone through a few, and personally I like the earlier ones. But IIRC, they would be more closely matched with tighter tolerances.

I've settled on early drivers (black paper) with newer 660S chassis (tighter clamp), older pads (for hd600) , newer cable, CC copper ring, with new bee foam insert (i tried different foam tips including comply)

It's got the older vintage german sound I like without any fatigue or sharpness, yet is detailed and balanced.

I find the newer sennheisers and beyerdynamics in general are darker and bass is elevated, and steers a bit away from the classic tunings.
