The Official Beyerdynamic T1 Impressions and Discussion Thread

  Hello!

About a year ago I bought my T1 to play with Bottlehead Crack OTL amp. I wished to build Crack and was in search for a good pair of headphones to match with this OTL.
At that time I had a Schiit Modi/Magni combo and thought Modi would be enough for my system.
So currently I run my T1 with Modi/Crack and it seems that T1 are not used at their full potential.

I think Modi is the reason and want to find a good matchig DAC for my T1. Or maybe Crack is also a reason?

Could you help me to find a good DAC, or DAC/Amp combo for T1 ?

Hi if you are running a stock Crack your T1 will scale up nicely by making a few relatively inexpensive upgrades to your Crack. I thought it made a very worth wile  improvement to my T1's it was also a lot of fun do to do upgrading the bits one at a time over several months

Consider some or all of the following with approximate  prices

Films signal caps to replace the electrolytic ones  $60 approx.
Russian Teflon bypasses $15 (can also be used without the film caps above to bypass the stock electrolytic ones)
Stepped attenuator $30 or Alps blue velvet $20
Triad C7-X choke $15 (replaces a resistor for a easily noticeable difference it provides a massive improvement to power supplies ripple the most noticeable benefits being a blacker background and a  increase in resolution and bass definition)

Check out the Carck upgrade path on the Bottlehead forum.

Hey guys,
Has anybody heard and compared both Bottlehead and micro idsd (as an amp) with T1?
I want to know that does it worth to get both micro (as dac) and Bottlehead (as amp)?

Edit:
There is a greatly priced a20 on FS forum. I've just found good reviews on them. Is there anybody who has heard both a20 and Bottlehead ?

Never heard the Bottlehead myself, so I can't comment on that. Overall I think the T1 might work well with OTL amps, given its high nominal impedance. And many love their T1 with tubes...

I don't think there's a glaring need for an amp when using the iDSD. I don't have an A20 at hand, so I can't compare that to the amp section of the ifi, but the ifi is a very well done device and I would not expect too much improvement by adding an A20. Its not that the T1 has so special requirements that it only works with a few select amps, the iDSD should be fine.

T1 in genetal works better with transformer output tube amp compare to OTL amp.

Hi,

I’ve owned the T1’s for about a year now, to my ears they sound amazing. Revealing more about a track than anything else I’ve listened to.
During this year I’ve used a portable Glacier AMP / DAC as I was travelling. This little box has done a fine job (again to my ears) but now I’m looking to upgrade to get the most out of the T1’s.

I have a few questions if anyone would be kind enough to spare some time answering.

1. My source is a Macbook Pro, where I use Apple lossless (more and more 24bit high rate tracks). On my setup currently I hear quite a bit of hiss WITHIN tracks. So not all the time, just when some instruments kick in, etc. This is on a lot of recordings old and new. Is this just a part of the music that I’m now picking up with the T1’s? I thought it could be due to the high volumes I need to use with the portable amp but as I say it’s not on all of the music, it’s just when the tracks of new instruments kick in. Hope that makes sense.

2. I think I’m sold on the WOO2 amp as that seems to come up again and again on this thread as the best for the T1s. I’m mostly interested in a wide Soundstage, details, and of course great sounding music. This seems to be the best pick out there for the T1s still?

3. The DAC I’m not so sure about. There seems to be a LOT of different brands, models, etc. For say < $1000 what DAC would be the best to go with the WOO2?

4. What’s the best way to go from my Macbook Pro to the DAC? USB? Digital cable? I honestly don’t understand the difference if it’s all digital?

Thanks again for any replies.

All the best,
Simon
