The "non-Grado" Driver Grado Thread

I am happy that you like my designs. I'm continiously trying to improve, and finally make my own headphones from scratch, driver included. This planar magnetic design of mine is a first step towards that dream. It contains a modified hifiman driver in a two-piece wooden enclosure. Currently I'm working on a headband design. But well it is slightly offtopic, maybe I should start my own thread here on head-fi as well :)

Nice Pimp Job.

Are the drivers pushed into the cups more (tilted) at the top of the cup or is it a optical illusions of the picture?

~D

Optical illusion. The drivers are fitted without adhesive though, so I can tilt them if I want to.

From "Duster" over at Audio Asylum, in Tweakers' Asylum. AudioCheck.net is said to be the internet's largest collection of online sound tests, test tones, and tone generators.

I prefer using regular CDs (selected for having a good variety of frequencies) for burning in headphones. Or do you use these for comparison tests between different headphones?

Assassin, i do not use that site for burning in headphones, i use the site when i want to test audio equipment before and after a Mod or Tweak, new equipment, and to test my hearing.
The site has a lot to offer.

 Sent you a PM.

I am in the process on building a pair of these for my twin brother's birthday!  I have a one side dead pair of SR125s, so I have just ordered the Senn PX100ii, from which I have just liberated the drivers.  I shall be using the headband and cable from the SR125 but with a custom embossed leather headband from http://www.plussoundaudio.com/accessories/general.html and I have just boight these woodies: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221638050109?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I am going to be using the Senn HD414 pads of whichI have a spare pair.  Will this be a good set up?  Is it worth me forking out for the L cush or G cush pads?

I have been using S-cush comfy pads with mine and the bass is way too much for my tastes.  In the vicinity of 4-6db higher from 20-100Hz than my K701, HD650, RS1.  Generally S-cush pads have a similar sound signature to the HD414 pads I used to own.  I have earzonk L-cush and G-cush pads incoming, that should help tame the bass and open up the soundstage a lot too.

Thanks!  Pad rolling is always something that can be done later, I suppose.  I just hope I don't screw the build up!  Never done anything as involved as this but mighty excited about trying!

Oh one build tip, when you're are cutting, trimming, blu-tacking, felt lining, dyna-matting...etc.  Do each step for the right and left earcups in parallel with each other, so that way its fresh on your mind and easier to match identical steps and materials right to left and vise-versa.

I didn't do this.  I for the most part built up each earcup separately... finished one side and then started work on the other based from memory what I had done earlier.  I ended up with some miss-matched blue-tack applications right to left, and this led me to some L/R channel imbalances.  I think it made my cans extremely sensitive to channel imbalances and differences in the L/R stereo recordings.  So my image would tend to wander back and forth, or be off-center in a certain familiar passage that I know should have a centered image.

I have since gone back in and completely re-done my blu-tack and acoustic chamber reflection damping, only this time paying much closer attention to L-R symmetry / matching.  It took the morning but it was worth the effort.

IMHO these cans are very sensitive to channel imbalances and the difference in L/R channels.  I am not sure why, but its nice to have the stereo image so clearly defined.

Thanks, that's a great tip and certainly something I could have easily overlooked.  some say the PX100 ii drivers are too small for their woodies, others say slightly too big!  I'm hoping for an easy fit because I can imagine that's where I might go wrong!
