  How the screw* do i update firmware on this brick?

Just read a thousand pages back on this thread and drag'n'drop the *.hex file to the AK100 root and then reboot, nothing happened, what else?

 
IDK why. You did the right thing. 
 
Just download file from iriver again(seems like many users are having issues with download file being incomplete)
Unzip the file
Drag the *.hex file in the root directory of AK100 and reboot.
 
It worked every time for me.

Make sure that the file is actually named ak100.hex.  If it was renamed something else, it won't work.

Also, if you've tried a non-genuine firmware (e.g. listrid) then it can cause issues with future updates in my experience.
 
Normally, the file won't even unzip if the download is corrupt so if you're getting the HEX file, but it's not loading, the problem is probably on the device itself (i.e. currently installed firmware) or the naming of the HEX file.

It is not *.hex it needs to be AK100.hex

I would not use the boost function.  The gain is not hardware amplification and iriver warns that this may lead to clipping at higher volumes  Since you are using an amp, you should not use the boost because the gain from hardware amping is less likely to lead to clipping or distortion.

I am running the RWAK100-S into the ALO Audio International via an ALO Audio Compact SXC 22 interconnect to drive a pair of FitEar ToGo! 334s via an XLR-terminated ALO Audio SXC 24 earphone cable. As such, I am most concerned about sound quality (real and perceived), rather than software features (i.e., boost functions, equalizers, etc.)

In a nutshell:
 
MKII has got a tighter bass and with fuller sound compared to the MKI + boost. Better extension into the highs and better separation as well.
 
Price difference includes the leather case and 2x32gb

He says that the first AK100 has some kind of lack of bass, and the AK100 II has powerful and impressive clear bass. Silent sounds became more audible too.
 
Don't care about his words if you use dynamic headphones, because in this case you should have the opposite result (bassy sound).

Thanks for the quick info! Did it say that the difference is a big enough jump to recommend the Mk2 ahead of the normal ak100?
And if the differences with ak120 is smaller?
