The NEW AKG K550 First impressions. Added pics!

If the K550 has more treble than the SRH940 that makes me lean towards the K550.  I would primarily listen to lighter, more female-vocal driven, acoustic music with it (Sara Bareilles, Melody Gardot, Alison Krauss, etc).  My HD600 is good for this, but I sometimes find myself wishing it were brighter and more sparkly (my Ultrasones are, but they aren't as natural, and are too colored), and of course, when not at home, closed-back.

It's a good headphone, but how good depends on music preferences really. For someone wanting a closed headphone for metal or classical, it'd be perfect I think.
IMO it just doesn't sound like a $300 headphone considering so many other headphones under $250 sound better.

I don't think any other headphone at this price can match the soundstage of the K550 though and be closed. D2000 maybe, but that's more like semi-open.

You highlight a major aspect of headfi researching and buying- price differences between countries.

In the uk, these are on amazon for £230, and the denon d2000 are for £220.

The shures are for £180/190.

So they're all about priced the same.

Absolutely not, imo.

In any case, I don't understand akg positioning this headphones as portable headphones.
There is absolutely nothing portable with this headphone, lol, its huge, heavy, don't hold on the head and even if its an effective headphone, you must have a very good amp with a lot of dynamic to make it correct, probably not with a portable source.

That's really surprising, given that AKG specifically designed it to be compatible with devices like iPods.  The size and weight is personal preference though.  I use my Pro 900s as portables, which are only 10g lighter, and have huge cups.

I have lot of ultrasone headphones like pro900 and K550 is coinsiderably less portabe than pro900.

K550 is much larger, more heavy and has much less clamping force or you must have a very large head.

Pictures don't show the clamping force, lol, but K550 is really huge.

You mean that clamping force is too low for portable use but, do they oscillate with normal movements?

They oscillate with normal movements. I think everything depends on the largeness (?) of your head, but for me, the K550 is definitely not a portable headphone, maybe for the "space jockey", but not me,lol.

How do these compare to the K272?

Currently (see after burn-in), K550 is completely different. K272HD sound is much more consistent, more punchy bass (quantity not quality), mids maybe less forward, but less bright and smaller soundstage. After 50h+ of burn-in K550 is already better than initially and i ll give my final opinion after 100->200h of burn-in, but i don't expect great miracles.
