S400 vs S500, which has more neutral highs? Is S500 slightly emphasized or is it neutral and is S400 slightly recessed or would you concider those more neutral (in-line with the mids)?

Yes a lot of work depending on what headphone you transplant it to. I ended up experimenting on a lot of combinations like what the T50RP modders do.
 
Waiting for ace of bicycle to return from his ebay vacation. Going to order another S500 or maybe two. I'm curious if I vented a third hole on the driver what the result would be.

Neutral highs I would say S400, S500 highs are on the bright side, they sound colored when compared to the S400.
 
The S400 certainly are not recessed in the highs in fact, they have one of the best highs that I've heard.

OK that's all I needed to know. I'm still concidering picking up a pair of S400 due to the unbeatable price even if I'm a very satisfied M-Audio Q40 user which has a bassresponse which is just spot-on for my needs. Exactly how bassy would you put these headphones, like are they slightly bass emphasized such as V-Moda M80 or ATH-M50 which has about 5dB boost in bass or are they even bassier? The Q40 measures around 8dB or so boost which is perfect for my needs (well ~9dB is perfect for me, thereabouts Ultrasone PRO900, Q40), let's say in-between a M50/M80 and sony XB series bass quantity is what I'm looking for but I also need somewhat balanced midbass vs subbass presence, about equal of both. Q40 provides me this but I'd gladly try another headphone as I've been using Q40 for a while now.
 
The genre I'm a fan of uses a wide range of bass frequencies and won't sound right if it's skewed either towards subbass (too little punch/impact, XB700, DT770 Pro etc) or midbass (too little rumble, eardrum vibration sensation, HP700, HTF600, D1100).

After adjusting the volumen,  i find the bass between the HTF600 and XB500/700.    More closee to the XB500 than the HTF600, the HTF600 sounds weak on bass.

Then it might very well be around the 8~9dB or so boosts compared to ~15dB in XB500 (too much) and HTF600 maybe around 5~6dB in the midbass but rolls-off in the subbass. I thought HTF600 has quite a decent/big amount of punch (midbass) but rolls-off in the subbass range too much, especially starting around 40~50Hz and below. I saw some other comments that S400 and S500 features pretty similar amount of bass, if so the S400 is probably more fit for me due to the highs not being emphasized.

I think the S500 is at the same level now as my FX-011 in sonic details (or about to surpass it). It's just the little headphone that could. It keep blowing me away with its sonic goodness.

Tiny. Lifeless. My KSC75's are dead, and they don't even know it lol! Well, they will have to show some signs of life until I get my S500's!
 
The problem for me with the DT1350's is that they are $300CN. It sounds like they are winners and great bang for the buck, but there are a few things that I would need to check out (such as comfort - many people say that they can only wear them for an hour or two). So before spending that kind of money on headphones, I would need to do quite a bit more homework, and I don't feel like doing any homework right now! So the S500's at $70CN are an easy spontaneous purchase, especially after reading yours and everyone's rabid high praise of them

I don't see how anyone could be disappointed with these headphones for $70/$80. They sound great. I'm sure you'll be excited once you hear them

The Fischer Audio FA-011 A very nice wooden cupped open headphone on the relative cheap. One of the better headphones for the cash actually. And one of the few open back headphones that actually has some bass presence. They take a month when you order them to get to you but is one of those headphones that gets a solid value rating as they only cost around $110 or so. There are some variations of the wooden cups and cords but all use the same driver.  I wanted these red wood cups but got a black wooden ones instead. These were nice when they were introduced but I have to say the HA-S500 are a better deal overall.
