the IPOD RUMORS thread [Updated to the EXTREME]

The pic of the new Nanos seems to be legit because Apple's legal department has required Gizmodo and 9to5 to remove it. So it could be the next Nano or, hopefully, just a prototype.

Lots of news today. ^ It's repoted to be real, called the "Nano Phatty"

(just in case lawers remove link) Text:
That really sketchy looking photo of the iPod nano "phatty" from yesterday? Yeah, you can officially file that under deceptively sketchy looking -- Apple's legal team called demanding we take the shot down, claiming ownership of the photo, and that it was "stolen" from the company. Ooook. Granted, Apple doesn't send takedowns to all confirmed-true leaks -- take the new aluminum Mac keyboard, for example. Apple never gave us a hard time when we broke that story. Still, Apple's legal team wouldn't be wasting its or our time if they didn't feel there was something to lose by inaction, so until further notice we're considering this the real deal. Just in case you missed it the first time, we pulled together a quick mockup of the newer, fatter nano. See? You really weren't missing anything. Expect 'em out in the next couple of months, says we.

Apple to usher in era of Mac OS X-based iPods

Apple Inc. will use a media event next month to unveil a new breed of iPod digital music players that have been injected with the company's most vital asset -- the Mac OS.

The move will culminate a multi-year effort on the part of the Cupertino-based electronics giant to form a new platform of digital devices around the common core of its legendary operating system software and expertise in industrial design.

Three of Apple's four business segments -- the Mac, iPhone and Apple TV -- already rely on derivatives of the Mac OS. In surgically replacing the iPod's Pixo-influenced OS with a modern-day variant of its homebred software, the company will have effectively scaled the Mac OS across its entire product matrix.

Internally, Apple is much further along, according to sources, who say the company will again tap an embedded version of the Mac OS to form the foundation of yet another business segment and digital device family in 2008. In the meantime, however, the company's efforts will reportedly focus on maturing its already established product families.

People familiar with this year's plans say Apple's iPod roadmap for the fall now calls for as many as four new models -- most, if not all, will employ NAND flash -- including major evolutions of both the flagship video iPod and iPod nano lines. It's these two iPod product families which are expected to receive the Mac OS treatment, though to varying degrees.

Sources in the Far East -- where Apple manufacturers its digital music players -- have recently vouched for sightings of a "full screen" iPod, which they believe will finally make its debut ahead of this year's holiday shopping season. The players are said to run a derivative of the Mac OS-based iPod software introduced as part of the company's iPhone handset back in June.

What's interesting, however, is that the Apple has also been working on Mac OS-based iPod software for models that will retain their click-wheels -- such as third-generation iPod nanos. Interface concept videos recently published and then pulled from MacRumors consisted of genuine Apple material to this effect, AppleInsider can confirm.

The videos illustrated intentions on the part of the gadget maker to carry over software design aspects from the iPhone, in addition to tying in features of its just-released iLife '08 digital lifestyle suite. In particular, they demonstrated widespread use of vibrant album art, Leopard-style interface overlays, a world clock widget similar to the iPhone's, and a new photo feature that would allow iPod nano users to browse their iLife '08 photo "Events" via a CoverFlow interface controlled by a physical click-wheel.

Exactly what may be in store for the remaining iPod models is admittedly unclear. However, one could simply represent modest improvements to the entry-level iPod shuffle, while the other could be one-in-the-same with much-rumored second iteration of iPhone.

Those people familiar with Apple's digital media player plans say an official unveiling of this year's offerings is on tap for mid-to-late September.

iPod "Touch"

iPod Touch - the New Flagship iPod
Submitted by Cleve Nettles on Thu, 08/23/2007 - 11:08.

Yeah we had a spy picture to show you but we've learned our lesson - twice. We'll just describe it and let your minds wander:

Update: We are having a contest!
Name - iPod Touch... HTC be damned!

Same form factor as the iPhone with some notable exceptions:
Outside rim is black, not silver like the iPhone and more flush with the screen like the 5.5G iPods not rounded like iPhone
No ear speaker or microphone for phoning
Thicker - slightly

Things that are the same:
OSX Embedded OS
480x320 screen
Coverflow-enabled iPod application
Single button home navigation

Things we wish we knew:
WiFi? (This is the Capper)
GPS?
NAND RAM and/or 160GB Hard Drives configs?
Cost? (Like it matters)

Also, just a quick note to Apple Legal. We've learned our lesson and will shy away from posting what could be considered trademarked information. 9to5Mac is an Apple enthusiest website and we are all huge Apple fans here (obviously). We are not trying to hurt the company - just inform other Apple consumers who might want more intel on upcoming products so that they may make more informed buying decisions. No one wants to spend their hard-earned money on a product that is about to get put in the dumper. We are just hyping your products and informing your consumers.

Who doesn't want that? Apple, let's just hug it out!

Peace!

It just doesn't really fit with Apple's previous designs but it could be a new addition to the lineup, even then it doesn't sound like Apple. I believe adding "The Phatty" would make no sense in the lineup, but it could be a transitional product from HDD to NAND Flash, so Apple could be releasing these and a HDD variant as their flagship Ipods with Video and keep the Nano as strictly music player. Just my thoughts.

yeah im not a big 'phan' of 'phatty'. it looks disgusting, apple has to continue it's style, the current nano's are beautiful!

stick with them, i say all apple needs to do is increase HD and add support for flacs, for all us audiophiles!

I went to my local BB store to buy a new 80gb ipod, and all but one of the stores in the whole city were sold out, with no new ones on backorder. I can't imagine a huge store like BB not having iPods in stock, so I wouldn't be surprised if a new model came out in the next few months.

I just hope the ipod touch doesn't adopt the iphone's troublesome recessed headphone port.
