the IPOD RUMORS thread [Updated to the EXTREME]

hmm, i like the idea of smaller (physical size) but the ipod is quite nice as it is, im happy with its physical size, and more welcoming of a larger harddrive.

but the one part of me kinda misses the older 4g ipods. back then the sole purpose of the ipod was to play music, whereas now ipod are putting focus on both music and video.

so tis annoying me, but still

hows this for an ipod rumour: red wine and apple are going to collaborate to sell imod ipods straight up lol!

I bet against them going to only 16GB with no big storage option available.

I say a 6G iPod comes out with more than 120gb.

leave the flash for the next gen nano.

next ipod should be 160gb

Personally, I think that we'll see an iPhone-esque iPod (40 and 120GB flavors) and then a miniaturized version which also plays video (size similar to the screen on the current iPod video?) that comes in 4, 8, and 16GBs (fulfilling the rumors).

Rumor or not now way apple goes from 30 and 80gb to new 16gb flash! NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

Remember that Apple/Jobs love to show how thin the iPods are, and the only way for the big iPods to go thinner is to use flash. Sooner or later, there will be a transition to flash. 32GB SSDs are increasingly used in laptops now. Apple might keep the "bigger" iPod with HDD, but it wouldn't surprised me if the 30GB becomes 32GB SSD. 32GB SSD might be too expensive for now, so maybe Apple will re-adjust the pricing scheme, having 16GB snucked in while waiting for the 32GB price to go mainstream. Or Apple might wait in releasing SSD based iPods until 08, and introduce multi-touch at the same time.

My prediction is:
-shuffle: price drop 1GB $49
-nano: price drop 2GB $99, 4GB $149, 8GB $199
-big iPod: solid state, no multi-touch: 16GB $249
-big iPod: HDD: 60/80GB for $299, 100GB for $349

2008 comes:
-shuffle: 2GB $49 or phased out and replaced by 2GB nano at $79
-nano: 4GB $99, 8GB $149, 16GB $199
-big iPod SSD with OS X/multitouch: 16GB $249, 32GB $349

IMO Apple will try selling multi-touch and bragging on how ultra super duper thin the latest iPod will be to compensate the pricier use of SSD compared to HDD. At the same time, the lower capacity HDD version will probably be phased out.

Of course I pull all of this from thin air.

If the big HDD versions are shelved, there goes my theory about Apple Lossless!

I'll need to start ripping MP3's again for the thing to hold most/all of my collection.

i reckon its all becoming to fancy like when listening to music, seriously, who needs a touch screen, or multi touch for that matter. if apple start adding all these stupid fancy things that are going to jus be there for looks, ill hav to switch over to a more dedicated mp3 player.

in the end do people one a handheld entertainment system or a music player?

160gb sounds wonderful to me!

So let me get this correct they are going back and making a 16GB video I pod without a phone in it?

I dont see this as selling that well unless its in the $120 range (if that)

The Apple rumor sites are notorious for getting predictions wrong. Jobs is a total security freak. He has leaked false info to various executives and fired all of them when one leaked, so Apple employees are among the most tight-lipped in the world. I'd take that rumor with a shakerful of salt.

Given the size of video files, 16GB would be more constricting for video than for lossless files. I agree we can see a transition involving large HD ipods along with the sleeker, touch screen, flash-based units. There is a shortage of flash memory after a factory shutdown in Taiwan that will take time to clear out, and with the iPhone's popularity other manufacturers are looking to offer their own versions. The demand will drive the development of technology though, and lower prices in the mid-long term.

I doubt the iphone will replace the ipod, since there will always be a market for music only players/storage without the requirement of activating cell service (unless it is optional, and there is no significant premium for the phone capability itself).

If the rumor proves to be true, I'd buy a bunch of 80G ipods to sell on FS for all the headfis stranded until flash capacity catches up to HD.
