the IPOD RUMORS thread [Updated to the EXTREME]

I don't understand the hatred towards touch screen... I have a Cowon D2 and it's pleasant to use, even when in my pocket... It's finger operated (rather than stylus), takes 2 minutes and a bit of ho ha to master... Like you use a scroll wheel for the first time...

I am much more interested in audio elements in the player and firmware (codecs support, gapless, SQ...)

Afraid of change?

Considering the 5G, 5.5G, 2Gnano, and iPhone are gapless capable, I assume Apple will keep that feature on any newer iPods.

well, i check apple insider as much as i check this site even though i do not own an ipod. i hope certainly it lives up to some of the hype that is based purely on speculation. as far as a portable setup is concerned, ipod truly has made quite a wonderful player. (coming from a former die-hard md junkie to a now anythingbutipod sort of listener - only because so many people have ipod) i it the best player

The only things I really hope for are true gapless, not the half-assed attempt Apple has put forth so far, and a digital output. Of course both are probably only a dream.

Half-assed? iPod gapless capability on MP3s and AACs are quite perfect to me. Show me any other MP3 DAP that can do gapless MP3 (other than rockbox). Show me DAPs that can do "true" gapless on MP3s and AACs.

Apples solution only works about half the time for me and this has been reported by many others as well. This is pretty much the only reason I put Rockbox on my iPod but Rockbox has it's own set of quirks that makes it a pain to use. I'd be much happier if Apple just did whatever the Rockbox team or Rio did.

A while back I remember reading a rumor about next gen ipods getting hybrid drives, with like 4gb of flash memory and 80-100gb hd, to increase battery life, possibly battery that might be needed for a larger screen with an advanced interface like the iphone has which needs more processing power.
The rumor didn't seem too credible though, since they were saying there would be 6 options for the full size ipod, 2 lower capacity flash ones (10-16gb or something) then 2 hard drive based ones and 2 hybrid drive ones, which seemed like more options than apple is likely to give. I still think the idea of hybrid drives would be cool, save a lot of battery and still maintain the capacities we're used to at a reasonable price. I don't know how thin the ipod needs to get, I think it could still stand at least one more generation with the thickness that a 1.8" hard drive adds. The current 30gb is pretty skinny, it's thinner than the iphone.

I just want this to come out and drive current generation prices down so I can pick up a 60gb 5.5 and rockbox it.

But will Apple ever pull its unwanted possesions out of the iRack?

If you haven't seen the skit....you wouldn't understand, lol.

Nope, but Apple will want us to focus on their latest product, the iRan.

LOL,

The next iPod has a sensor package that can be used to sniff hidden bombs under park benches.

Anyway, my takes:

The shuffle will come with a screen and perhaps a 2giger. Lower prices for the lower capacities. Click wheel behind the player?

The Nano will be the one to be bumped to 16gigs. Video capability and maybe a slightly bigger screen sideways ala Zune. More java games, better screen clarity. Smaller click wheel for the bigger screen.

Hard drive iPods would definitely be bumped to 100gigs. Maybe even 120. Thickness identical to the currrent 80gig. Samsung's recent announcement of releasing the 120 drives for public consumers kinda suggests they need to get the drives out before consumers salivate over the bigger capacity iPods. True video pods. Maybe the iPhone screen will be implemented with these players leaving the click wheel technology on the flash players. A possible 16gig flash iPod Video the size of the current 30gig iPod (or thinner) to make way for next year's higher flash capacities.

The idea of a hybrid iPod is also interesting and Jobs will revolutionize the DAP market again.

Am I gonna get a new gen iPod? Unlikely. Unless Vinnie can bless these.
