Ohh cool, are these official MDR-F1 driver replacements or third party/aftermarket ones? Where did you find them? My pair still works fine but I've been spooked by all the reports of failing drivers to be honest 😅

Audio-Technica, again you dissapoint with your lack of dampening...

ATH-A100Ti

At first glass the driver looks dissapointing, especially for how much these sold for and that a lot of audio-technica's even then had metal fron baffles. But the entire baffle plate isn't plastic, it's fibreglass.

Except for the D.A.D.S which is made from plastic. Honestly that D.A.D.S seems to be shared with all ATH-A models at the time

Absolutely beautiful titanium cup, but barely any dampening!
For comparison sake, the ATH-A9X

Driver is definetely different but despite the baffle plate being the same shape, it's entirely plastic.

Same D.A.D.S

I'd argue the mirror finish aluminium is better looking than the blue of the titanium. Still lack of dampening but the lack of it doesn't really affect the sound so much.

If all the information is correct, the A100Ti and W2002 share the exact same driver, so it looks like Audio-technica just shoved it in an A frame design without care for tuning.

Newer Ap2000ti has no cup damping either- I remember reading somewhere they do it on purpose to highlight the material's effect on the sound (might explain why their higher price headpones seem to have a mixed reputation & more of a niche audience than might be expected from a major brand).

It's definitely something they do, especially for the wooden models but I also imagine there would be some tuning at the very least. These despite all the good stuff they do, really do sound cavernous and almost echoey which for me pretty much ruins them. It's a big shame because the mids and bass on it are superb and they have one of the best vocals I've ever heard.

The thing is, the aluminum A9X and their cheaper counterparts, the A7X and A5X don't have this effect. They sound great and quite good soundstage and separation-wise for a closed back. So I really do think its a lack of any tuning rather than intentional tuning. The W2002 is considered one of the best sounding of the woodies and reading the impressions, the A100Ti definitely has some aspects. But that, closed in, cavernous sound ruins them for me. I typically don't like to mod but I think I might as well get a bunch of mineral wool and shove it into the cups.

Just a quick photo of the four, I need to take them in a better place.

The ATH-W1000Z, I think this was the first time I was actually taken back by a construction of a headphone

Standard audio-technica construction so far, the generous foam ring actually make them very comfy
20240313_212715.jpg

The rarely seen other side of the wooden cups. No coating or varnish at all. It's a single solid piece. I'm trying to think whether or not the shape is lathed or press formed. Both of which are REALLY expensive and labourious processes

The D.A.D.S with a piece of foam. Probably the most cheapest part and looks like any other D.A.D.S of the era.
20240313_222146.jpg

Forgot to mention that the cups have a quite a big ring of that acoustic wool. A big contrast to the earlier A series.

20240313_213303.jpg

Driver plops right out, no glue or clamps. Only the screws of the D.A.D.S hold them in place. The tolerance on these are just, increadible. The fact that it's all held in place with screws and no rings or glue is really astounding. This is probably what Audio-technica means by the floating mount. No leakage or vibrations on the frame at all.
Speaking off...

20240313_222519.jpg

This is just, incredible. It's a solid piece of magnesiusm. The baffle and body is just one solid piece.

It's really unlike any other Audio-technica I've come across, even hi-end ones like the AD2000

Typically as shown before, the driver would be held in a plastic or fibreglass baffle which is then screwed onto the frame. It means that the baffle and frame can be shared throughout many models even if they're made of different materials e.g. fibreglass baffle on a magnesium frame or plastic on plastic.

I wonder what other models use a similar construction because this would've been VERY expensive.

And all of that kinda works. Only the cups have any vibrations as intended and it sounds, rather pleasant.

Warm, thick bass, lovely vocals. Coloured yes but pleasantly so and it doesn't sound wonky like the W1000X. Soundstage and other technicalities are definitely not on par with others in its price.

Since the original cable on these were cut, I plan on maybe making a removable cable mod, but I was just too excited to get them working hence the much cheaper cable on them now

One of the more lesser known Sony's, the MA300!

Going to recable this soon, so expect some better photo's later

Its a very unique sony because despite how rare they are to find usually, they never took off. I find them cool due to the ability to bend around your earshape.

Interesting so the drivers are on a universal joint?
