The Headphone Driver Pics Thread

Hey guys!!

I have a Soundmagic HP1000 and would like to improve its bass response, but I have no idea where to start.
I hate to be that guy, but there isn’t much you can do to improve the bass on these. The driver itself just isn’t designed to pump out much bass. Even after enhancements the driver will just give a dull thud.

Sucks too, because every other aspect of sound on those cans is fantastic.

I just think about getting a couple of new drives on Aliexpress, but there are so many options that I get lost, I keep researching the reviews I see of the drives that people buy and test.
I think this test is very valid since it's not that expensive and worse than it is, there's no way to stay :L3000:

The pair on the far right look exactly like the takstar pro 80 drives.

Got curious and opened up the JVC HA-SW01.
Was easier than I expected and fully reversible. No destruction required....

I'm very pleased with the build quality, design and construction of this headphone.
One of the best I've ever seen.

Driver is held to the baffle with a 3-screw retainer ring, so can be easily replaced.
Driver is FULLY vented around the rear circumference - no asymetrical damping.

Also the most complex damping scheme I've ever seen from a stock headphone.
Extremely well chosen materials... nothing is going to go gunky over time.

who doesn't like to see a bit of nekkid wood? :3

Final Audio Sonorous III

In the sonorous line of headphones, they all seem to use the same 50mm graphene driver, with the exception of the 4 and 6 which have balanced armatures. Impedance is the same except again with the 4 and 6. I'm gonna guess the armatures are wired paralell with the driver to cut the impedance in half like that. Sensitivity is the same across the board.

It would be difficult for a small company to make different drivers for these headphones, the identical shape and their eerily similar specs lead me to believe they use the same driver in this entire line of headphones which cost from about $300 to $5000 for the flagship, Sonorous X.

Presuming such wild notions, I thought the Sonorous III would benefit from mods especially damping. The way the headphone responds to mods also further reinforces my crazy theory that Final is using the same driver along their entire Sonorous line.

I have modded mine quite a bit, mods list can be found inthe last few pages of this thread. The latest mod was to replace the stock wire which looks to be a 30awg maybe even smaller wire with 24 gauge Mundorf Silver/gold wire and mundorf silver/gold solder.

There's a sale on Aliexpress at the moment so ordered about $200 worth to see how they perform while I wait for the Peerless 50mm drivers to come back in stock on Digikey. Once they get here, I'll do a writeup here.

It's been a while since I've looked into aliexpress drivers, but I remember considering all of those for my diy headphones, and I ended up going for the beryllium ones (last link), as they seemed to have the best specs and reviews. Will be interesting to see the comparison though.

hey, i have seen a lot of aliexpress drivers in here but did anyone test those?

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002372497066.html

they are pretty cheap and if they are any good, maybe there are some better drivers than these in similar price?
edit: i found some drivers by tymphany that were recommended a lot but i never found any info about how they sound, maybe you guys have some info about them?

For a 540ohm what is the acceptable +/- tolerance range? Im not sure about Db and same goes for if the advertisted dB tolerance range is dependent on the actual current dB/volumr.

speaking of buying drivers, got a janked up el-8c up on sale, looks like a soldering problem though, as the owner describes it as "requires a certain cable angle to work" should i take the plunge? the guy offered me @17000 JPY to keep it as my own, never handled a planar though, are their circuit boards oriented similarly to dynamics? should i give it a new chassis? knew a guy who knows a guy that owns a vacuum box for wood stabilizing purposes, and i can always use my campus' prusa 3d printer for resin molds and cups

If the "requires a certain cable angle to work" is about the removable cable then getting a replacement cable will do the work. But any issues other than that will be a pain, dont even try to disassemble the headphone u'll most likely destroy it because of how they're put together
