Having been more or less an exclusive IEM user, I have to disagree as X3 does go decently well with a good number of my IEM. Maybe there are IEM out there that just don't 'click' with X3, but saying that it is 'in general' is a bit overboard IMO.

I entirely agree with that. Pairing the X3 with my HY3 or GR07 is a joy, pairing it with my TF10 is not good at all. As is often the case, some pairings have synergy and some pairings don't. People suggesting that the X3 doesn't work with IEM's is just a gross generalisation and not true at all.

Allow me a moment to be the few to put down the X3 for what it isn't great at. (Its pros are mentioned everywhere if u need 1)
To give people a better idea of what DAP they are getting and what's to be sacrificed at that pricing.

I've found X3 to pair badly with IEMs in general.
Because of the power of the amp section or some had mentioned, line out is pretty loud.
This means that every step of the volume is quite a big step compared to the ak100/120 or even Neutron app on mobile phones.
It could be due to the dac or amp, either way, it makes driving huge cans well.

I've also found that the vocals/midrange are quite forward, making for bad pairings especially for IEM that has forward vocals/mids as well,
gives off a "in your face" kind of effect, however, pair well for laid back cans/iems.

3rdly, warm sounding, because so, I've found details to be left out, as well as a more congested soundstage.

It seemed ClieOS's mod has addressed these issues in the event u find the sound not well to your liking like I do/ bad pairing with ur current IEM.
But that also means perhaps voiding the warranty by opening it up and modding.
Additional, an amp can be used thru line out, but kind of defeat the purpose of having a small DAP.

Overall, found it value for money, but I didn't think the amp section showed the potential of the player.
P.S. just my 2cents, overall it just didnt went well with my IEM and others considering the X3 can consider my points.

The X3 has the gain switch, right? What's your gain setting, high or low?
And, anyway, the line out loudness has nothing to do with the amp section. As others mentioned, the X3's LO voltage is even lower than the standard 2.0 V.
Unless you meant the phone output.

Is there anyone who can share his/her opinion about pairing X3 with Ortofon E-Q5? Anyone tried this combo?

Sure, charge it up, why not.

1. How long? 8 hours or less before the first time use? (Its there a manufacture recommended pre-charge time?)
2. The overcharge will damage the fiio x3? (for example charge your fiio x3 over night)

Appreciate if some1 can answer my questions.

There is a light that comes on when you charge it, on the face of the X3, below the 'volume down' button. When it goes from red to green it is charged. How long it takes to charge will depend on how much charge is in it already and whether you are connecting it to a mains charger or USB. There is a .PDF file on the X3 itself if you connect it to your PC, and if you read that, it will tell you approximate charging times for different scenarios.

I believe there is also an internal shutoff in the X3 that prevents overcharging.

All of this info is already available on the X3 itself in PDF format, and on the Fiio Website (X3 manual)

Not complaining, just a tip ;)

for people who have problem that X3 can't index all the sound tracks, we believe that it is cause by the max quantity that X3 can index in one folder. we will fix this bug in the future firmware update. thanks for everyone who reported to us and help us figured out the problem.

don't worry about the overcharging. X3 will stop charging when

1, the battery is fully charged.

2, the charge time is over 10 hours even the battery is not fully charged. ( sorry it maybe 12 hours but I forget now).

3, The temperature is too high when charging

Anyway, we spent lots of time in the charge function . for example

1, X3 can be charged by any kinds of USB charger even by USB in the PC or Laptop because it can auto adjust the charger current depended on what power it is supplied.

2, There are LED to indicate the charging even the displayer is turn off. I can't see the same design in other DAPs .

3, The temperature detector function.

it is easy to decrease the LO output level but hard to increase because need higher power supply. did we make something wrong ?

btw, someone bought our amp just to boost the line out of iPod/iPhone because the direct LO is not high enough to drive the car audio

Treble is a mix bag - well bodied treble but short on extension. Not that bad - Fixable with ICs or amp...

Forward yet smooth mids.

Midbass is also given an extra push but sub-bass region is just average.

Soundstage is 2-3 steps narrower

I dont think X3 is short with "microdetails" like what most reviewers said. It may miss some of treble details but so as AK with its a bit shallow midbass. These shortcomings are so little that amp or even just ICs can compensate.
