Treble is a mix bag - well bodied treble but short on extension. Not that bad - Fixable with ICs or amp...

Forward yet smooth mids.

Midbass is also given an extra push but sub-bass region is just average.

Soundstage is 2-3 steps narrower

I dont think X3 is short with "microdetails" like what most reviewers said. It may miss some of treble details but so as AK with its a bit shallow midbass. These shortcomings are so little that amp or even just ICs can compensate.

You kind of nailed my impression of the X3.

So you would suggest pairing the X3 with an amp for the shortcomings?

Is there anyone who can share his/her opinion about pairing X3 with Ortofon E-Q5? Anyone tried this combo?

I've actually been using this combination all week and the sound is amazing...with very deep bass. I listen to mostly electronic music so I find it quite pleasing... Some might find it to much with the x3's initial settings...granted, I haven't even really gave the q5's a proper burn in yet...

im just using "Kimber" adapter and to my ears, it can match even the AK but with dif tonality...

But yes, with D42 and again using Kimber IC is much more ideal IMO...

The gain per step is the problem here.
Just to illustrate for ur understanding,
I prefer the volume in between 18 and 19
It leaves me with either a lower or higher volume than I would have liked.

While you may not like this solution, an easy fix is a hard-wired attenuator in series with your IEM. 4 resistors, a plug and a socket does it. Unfortunately I don't know of anyone who makes these to order so it is a DIY solution most likely.

The currently playing playlist resets whenever I switch the player off or even just go to the previous track; is there a way to make it "remember" the playlist?

My memory play is currently set to "position".

Position should do it.
What filetype do you play?

I've been trying the X3 out with my Phonak Audeo PFE232's (neutral/reference filters, comply foam tips) recently and finding them to go well together in case anyone has wondered about this pairing.  Seems like they offset the natural warmth of the X3 to give a balanced presentation.  Very enjoyable.

standard as in standard for desktop devices...

You mean mobile line outs don't have any?

As in 2.0 vrms is standard for say a cd player or a dac you have at home. Mobile players usually have much lower line level output. The X3's line-out voltage is actually pretty high for a mobile device
(even the AK120 is listed at 1.5Vrms)

I'm a little confused by all the complaints about the output level of the X3's line out.  It's one of things I like best about it.  Finally, a DAP with a true line out!  It mates perfectly with home audio systems, and especially well in car systems.

If the consumer audio standard is 2.0 vrms, then it should be as close as possible to the standard, and I think the X3's 1.7 vrms is the closest of all portable DAPs on the market.

The problem some are experiencing with certain portable headphone amps is that those amps were designed to pair with the headphone out jacks (and the poorly implemented line out jacks) of iPods and similar mass-market devices.  It's been mentioned in this thread that the iPod's line out is just .55 vrms.  I, for one, do not need an audiophile DAP with the same kind of incompetently desigend line out as an iPod!

If your headphone amp doesn't mate with the X3, then the headphone amp is the problem.  You can use your iPod with your headphone amp, which is what the amp was desinged for in the first place.  Or you can invest in a properly designed headphone amp that will mate with a true line out.

The quality of the line out is also something to be considered. Sony and Sandisk line outs have been known to have some noise and artifiacts in them

Apple's pre thunderbolt line outs had some of the cleanest and competently designed line out ever implemented by a mass consumer company.

Yep, if X3 doesn't work with your IEM or headphones because the middle amp is then too loud. Get a new amp.

I recently purchased a FiiO X3 and I am busy familiarizing myself with all of it's functions. One thing i haven't done yet is hook the X3 up to my home hi-fi DAC. I have a question concerning this. My DAC is an all but ancient EAD Theatremaster Ovation pre/pro which does strictly 16/44.1-48khz PCM and of course Dolby digital and DTS. I have loaded up the X3 with hi-rez files both 24/96 and 24/192 all in uncompressed Wav. My question is this; I have checked the somewhat amusing owners guide, you would think a company like FiiO would employ someone who can translate Chinese to English properly, but i digress, and nowhere is there any mention as to  what format and at what sampling rate the FiiO X3 outputs at it's coaxial digital out. I wouldn't imagine it would be the native bitstream simply because I have never heard of, or seen for that matter, a DAC that advertises that it decodes WAV, or Flac or MP3. Does such a DAC exist? My old DAC does not decode hi-rez signals so if I hooked up my X3 to it via coax would my DAC be able to play the hi-rez files on the X3? Does the FiiO convert the signal to some form of PCM? I guess that's actually two questions.  Does what I'm asking make any sense or am I missing something obvious here? Oops three questions.......

the resolution of the coaxial output of x3 is the same as the file you playing in X3. for example, x3 will output 192k/24b PCM signal when you play 192k/24B music. so

buy a new decoder to pair with X3 or don't play any music which higher than 48K/16B in X3
