I'm torn between buying a ipod classic 7th gen vs an X3. I can rockbox the 7th gen which will allow me to play almost all formats. My question is if the sound quality of an x3 is better than a classic?

x3 hes better sound quality indeed ( better dac + better amp )  .....i am typing now while listening to it ... and i have ipod touch too ..never touched it again 

 and belive me ipod touch with a quality headphone can sound very good 
 
but user interface of any ipod is more beautiful than fiio x3

you can ....but it will be unstable and with several usage problems ... and with more complicated way using other boot loader called emCORE

EDIT....Mmet beat me to it.

I have a ebay ipod 5.5 80g on its way, together with the fiio x3.....due to stupidity.... But to the OP, the fiio apeals to me because of the sample rates it supports and because it supports the formats I use, natively, and the digital out. I suspect I will be putting the 80 gig ipod back on ebay immediately on SQ alone.

Data capacity may be a consideration for you?

Thanks for the multiple responses on Rockboxing a Classic. I seem to remember reading something about this and deciding the problems out weighed the advantages. I'll have to read it again.

I'm just going to use dbpoweramp and convert my flac files to alac, lossless is lossless, and run it out the line level dock connector to my e11. I've tried my mp3's that way and it sounded real good. I just need to convert and re rip some now. I'm sure the X3 has some SQ advantages but I like the classic interface. No perfect answers with audio.
