Anyone else having trouble play HDCD on the Fiio X3?

HDCD isn´t your problem as HDCD is nothing else than a normal CD (with embedded information that needs to be decoded by a capable decoder - which simply gets ignored by any non-capable device). I suspect there´s something wrong with either the cue-sheet or the compression for APE. Transcode the APE file to FLAC (don´t forget to change the cue-sheet) and you should be allright.

It works! Thanks for the advice Marlene. Also, you got a nice blog, lots of stuff I'm interested in.

Windows sound settings. right click the sound icon, playback devices, properties, farthest tab on the right, change that to 24/96 or whatever you want. Fiio will display whatever you set it to.

I shoudl point out, it is entirely worthless to upsample and upconvert bit depth when all of your music is 16/44.1 so dont bother changing it unless you actually have >16/44.1 files.

With CyberMonday tomorrow, and lots of deals coming up on SD cards...what can you all say about SD cards for those who just bought a X3? SDHC or SDXC? Class? Brands better than other brands? Anything else I should know but don't know to ask...?

And has anyone collected in one good post what to do about formatting them after purchase...?

Thanks all!

I can only report that I've had success with my SanDisk 64GB Ultra MicroSDXC Class 10 card that I picked up on sale at Amazon for about $50. It was formatted as exFAT, which I understand many large capacity cards are, and I bought it before the firmware update that allowed formatting with the X3 itself. I had a USB adapter, so I reformatted it like I would any other disc in Windows. It's now FAT32 and works just fine in the X3.

Yes, I use SanDisk 64gb card. In fact, I got it got $32.99 from Best Buy and/or their storefront on eBay. So, if you are planning to buy one, then hurry :)

Just received my X3 to replace my Motorola Atrix 2 as a DAP. Paired with the E12 and my HD600's, all I can say is WOW!! Keeping it short, not only am I able to gain clarity that my phone could never achieve but the volume this combo is able to achieve is astounding... The X3/E12 combo provides a similar experience to my Schiit Magni/Modi combo as far as "detail" is concerned, but the X3/E12 goes louder and the bass goes lower. Quite a powerful mobile experience!!

Thanks FiiO! :) :)

There is so much in this thread on files, formatting, categories, etc, etc, etc..........

Not complaining, I'm just having trouble finding info I'm after. I sure know how to upgrade the firmware, format the SD card and label and organize my library, though.

I'm trying to determine if this is a better match for me than my Sony NW-Z1060

Upgrade or just sideways in terms of SQ?

Well, I was trying to answer that by comparing the specification of their amplifier stages, but apparently Sony was only willing to disclose that it has an "S-Master MX digital amplifier" :p
You can read about X3's full tech specs here http://www.fiio.com.cn/products/index.aspx?ID=100000045041475&MenuID=105026016 (click the Specification tab)

As someone with vested interest in FiiO I can't really tell you more than that. ;)

Is there a difference between SDHC OR SDXC ? Which is recommended by Fiio ?

Thanks.

James, if you're reading this, can I format the internal memory of the X3? It's using 6GB that I cannot see or delete (errors fixed by windows).

Well, I'm not James but I can tell you that you can format it :) Format it to FAT32 using windows' "default allocation size" and everything will be fine :)

Also it is not recommended to let windows "scan and fix" drives on the X3 unless you're sure you've done something screwy with them (such as pulling the plug in the middle of a file transfer) :o
