I don't understand why anyone would spend ages looking for a DAP, then go to the trouble of doing a mod
that doesn't affect the sound quality?

Cannot figure what?

It's an E12 and an X3.  Wish I could purchase them as a package!

I was specifically talking about open source, with the source code it's much easier to modify the software, so users will be able to plenty of fancy things like creating their own UIs and etc.

Than we're talking about the same thing. I guess It should have been understood by me that open source code is what's meant.

Rockbox can, in a way, affect the sound quality because the eq is infinitely more tweakable than the apple ipod UI, for instance. Plus you can play flac files (and others), and you are no longer tethered to itunes if you have an apple product - it's just drag and drop. I think a lot of people get it just to not have to deal with itunes anymore.

FW can definitely affect character, even without EQ. There are many fail points in a DAP. I'm glad Fiio has taken their time here.

Will the X3 accept 128GB SDXC cards?

Not, the maximum capacity of TF card is only 64GB. can't find any 128GB SDXC TF card so hard to confirm it.

But, if the X3 conforms to the SDXC standard, it should theoretically support up to 2TB microSDXC cards (if and when they become available, because that's what the standard calls for), correct?  Only potential problem is, will the X3 firmware allow for such a volume?

I just purchased a Cowon J3 to play with (until the X3 becomes available), and I've been reading how its expandable memory capacity is limited because of firmware issues (as in, it will read a 64GB card, but only up to 8,000 files...and only if the files are pre-loaded in a PC).  It would be unfortunate to see the X3 hamstrung by such limitations.
