It's actually worse than that - the rips will all be at different volumes, so more than likely that is what he is hearing.  He's also just doing one test and identifying rather than trying to (blind) get a statistically relevant number correct. I know regarding the volume between formats - because its one of the first things I found when I was comparing codecs.

@thepooh - thanks for posting what you did - it explains a lot - and I'm not being condescending here, I really appreciate it. Your test is flawed on a manner of fronts - but if you're happy, then that is all that really matters. I wouldn't go claiming the old golden ears badge, nor making public claims that you have successfully discerned one from the other though.

I thought this comment was enlightening
Actually, there are two types of headfiers on headfi

a. Those relying on numbers and graphs
b. Those relying on their ears

If you're really serious about finding the truth - as it relates to you - then you should be using both.  Relying solely on one or the other unfortunately leads to drawing conclusions based on incomplete data.  At the end of the day though - as long as you're happy - that is all that really matters.

Skullbox,

You will use USB from Mac to X3 (2nd gen?).  Go to "Audio MIDI Setup" found in Applications folder > Utilities folder and select the X3.

Connect X3 line out to stereo.

The coax is for X3 to another DAC.

My OTG connection (I use a Kingston microDuo 64GB) has decided to start malfunctioning, like, my player keeps saying the OTG unit was removed. It worked fine (so so) with firmware 1.3 and I hadn't ried it with 1.4 until today... I guess I'll have to give up and just get another card and change the cards accordign to what I want to listen... Which is pretty dumb.

There's no USB cable that come with the X3. (I presume that will have to buy one ) What kind of USB cable is needed, and Where this cable have to be connected on the dap ? top 3.5mm jack or micro-usb connector ?
The coax cable that come with the dap, the 3.5mm part go in the top jack, but the other (female) end go where ?
Sory, but This is unclair, what this "Audio" midi setup means ? this is not present on my Mac PPC OS10.5

Skull,

The USB cable is the micro USB to USB A cable that you connect to your computer to load music.  It works for file loading (storage setting) or DAC (DAC setting) depending on how you set the FiiO.

The Coax adapter connects to another coax cable that you connect to a separate DAC for using the FiiO as a transport.

I had a long car trip over the weekend and the sound coming from the line out is outstanding. I personally enjoy the soundstage better than anything else, and let me tell you that I was not disappointed with the X3II, pretty amazing for a US $200 DAC.

I made some changes to my theme over the weekend:

1) Made the progress bar thicker for better visibility in the playing screen.
2) Better alignment of the gain icon
3) Changed the progress icon of the progress bar for a vertical line in the playing screen.
4) Taller count numbers in the playing screen for better visibility.

Still based in 1.4 for OTG

Link in my signature, enjoy!

I have a question about line out on the X3ii. I use the Sennheiser HD598 most regularly but I want to listen music together with a friend who owns the ATH M50. Can we use the headphone port and the line out port as a psuedo splitter, or will that be damaging to the headphones/impossible /inconvenient due to disparity in listening volumes? Is this problem better solved by buying a decent splitter, or do splitters reduce the quality of the music? I would think that the X3 has enough power to drive both headphones (if I understand currents and voltages correctly) but I would rather hear from those wiser than I.

Thanks guys!

My X3II came with a micro USB cable.

Yes, mine as well. I using it mainly to charge. I've never using this USB cable to connect to my Mac, yet!
I've see not much instructions in the booklet, on using the DAP as a DAC, using cable, and settingup the DAP itself.

The short coax cable, it seam to be used to conect one end to the DAP Line-out, and the other end to.....maybe it will need another, longer cable as well!?!
Where this other end cable (male RCA) have to be plugged in ? I presume in the Audio Coax Input on my Yamaha Audio syst. !?! My DAP will need to be in the "Multifonct.outputs" to "Coax out" mode !?!

What is the purpose use, nor, when I will have used the Multifunc.outputs: "Line out" and "Coaxial out" !?!

I was using Fiio X1 for last few months. Now I have decided to upgrade to either Fiio X3/ Sony NW-A25. I am bit confused which one to choose. I have read Sony has weak amp, if I pair it with Fiio E12 amp, will it be comparable with Fiio X3+Fiio E12? DSD support is not of much use for me, since I listen FLACs only.
