I was using Fiio X1 for last few months. Now I have decided to upgrade to either Fiio X3/ Sony NW-A25. I am bit confused which one to choose. I have read Sony has weak amp, if I pair it with Fiio E12 amp, will it be comparable with Fiio X3+Fiio E12? DSD support is not of much use for me, since I listen FLACs only.

The X3II is the one to go with if you want to upgrade from your X1.

Does Fiio X3 2nd gen really need an amp like fiio e12 or its internal amp is strong enough?
Right now I have Audio Technica ATH-M40x, should I buy an open back headphone like Beyerdynamic DT800 pro(I am looking for wide Soundstage) or I should buy an amp to get better out of x3?

FiiO X3II doesn't realy need an amp. Yes, its internal amp suffice. In fact, it would be helpfull if you have to drive big cans. If Amp/Dac is requered, E17k or E12a will be just fine.

You would want open cans to get a bigger sound stage. X3 doesn't need an amp, but an amp can give the X3 longer battery life and hardware bass/treble controls (depending on the amp).

M50x are bass heavy from what I've read.  If you're into that, then go for it.  The X3 will have no issues driving them.  Being a metal head myself, I'd recommend the Phillips SHP9500.  They are cheaper and feel they are great for metal.  Great highs and mids and punchy bass.  I would even recommend Sennheiser HD558 or HD598, but they don't have as much bass as the SHP9500.  Bottom of my list would be Grado SR60e or SR80e, but I found these to lack a little in the highs, yet the mids and bass was good.  Grados aren't very portable though with a fixed 6 foot cable.  The others I mentioned have detachable cables.

philips shp9500 seem very good...i red lots of recommendations about headphones and i never saw philips...they are also on the cheap side and this is good...too bad here in Greece we dont have a store where i can listen to these headphones...that's why i'm searching it a lot because i wont have a second chance...sennheiser also have very good headphones...i guess all these you said will be good for metal music...thank you very much!!!

The M50x are closed headphones which will cut out some outside noise.  The headphones I suggested are all open so you can still hear what's going on around you and the sound might leak.  The open cans offer a bigger sound stage.  Always test before you buy (if possible) or read as many reviews as you can.  Google headphones for metal and you'll find a thread here on head-fi that may help.  I'm a fan of the SHP9500 though and think they sound great for metal.  \m/

yeap thats why i said i was looking into mx 50 because of the drums..i prefer closed type cause i have electronic drums and i dont want to hear outside noise.. :)
but the ones you suggested might be open but still they are not earbuds so they should cut a little noise...thanks again i'll start looking for reviews... \m/

If you are interested in closed cans. Blue Lola and the NAD HP50 are also good headphones if you want over ear.
NAD HP50 provides really good soundstage for being a closed can. The roomfeel simulates being a room with high fidelity speakers.

But Lola simulates a room of musicians.

Both are nice for portable use for me.

Also check out the Beyerdynamic T51 on ear headphones. Great portability and Tesla driver technology.

Have had the x3 ii for about 2 months. Noticing the screen is plastic I was particularly careful with it.

It seems to be an easily scratched type of plastic, my phone's screen is plastic and it's held up very well over the years.

Guess I hope that Fiio considers offering another version with a glass screen like gorilla glass or something... I'd pay the premium for a premium x3 ii

It'd probably help the "cheap plastic shell" sound that happens when my earphones hit the screen,

oh and with this "dream x3 iii" (ahaha, v3)  the gaps would be tightened up....they're huge!!  The select button has a gap nearly 1mm wide!Same for the wheel...and the other buttons wouldn't "wiggle"......wiggle wiggle wiggle

but at least...GO GLASS!!!

Yeah I also had this issue. Throwing my fiio x3ii in my bag with some other stuff. Ive had scratches on the fiio x3 screen even with protector. Its a very small scratch.
I decided to put it in a cloth bag from now and then toss it in my bag :)

Don't be confuse, X3ii come with plastic shield protection on the screen display already pre-installed.(you'd get 2 xtra) The scratchs issues you may have is only on the screen protection, not on the display it self!

For Best protection... Just cut a piece on an "InvisibleShield", Glass, hdx or alike, any smartphone protection sheet, and your set for many turbulences.
