Can anyone offer insight on the 

SRM-252S​

 and SRM-323s driver units, is it worth the extra cash? I was wondering if the low end 252s would drive the SR-407/SR-307 reasonably well, it seems that Stax doesn't recommend using the 252s with higher end Lambdas. 
 
I listened to a bunch of Lambdas at a meetup over the weekend, almost a good hour just comparing. I really enjoyed the SR-407 on the SRM MKII (I believe that was the correct amp) and I'm considering a Stax setup now... 307 + 323s/252s is mainly interesting me.

I used the SRM-323S with my SR-307 with good results. I also enjoy it with my SR-Omega, so I think it could last a while (unless you want SR-007s).

I tried mixing and matching some headphones and amps at an audio show a few months ago.
The SRM-323 certainly isn't twice as good as the SRM-252, but it does sound more refined.
But to be honest, I only had maybe 5 r 10 minutes to compare the various 'phones and amps
One way to look at it is you can use the SRM-252 until you get the extra cash to upgrade to the SRM-323.
They do work with either 207 or 307 or 407 'phones.

Thank you both for the feedback, looks like I have my mind set on the 252s/SR-307 or a 2170 setup. Like I said, I have heard the 404le, 407, and lambda normal bias (loved them all) so I'm hoping the SR-307/ SR-207 are comparable to them. I like a neutral to slightly bright sound, which is how some described these.

How much are you looking to spend? If you're going to be buying them separately, it might run you a little more.
 
You can get the SRS-3170 (SR-307 + SRM-323S) for under $1000 these days. You'd have to put in some effort to find the SRM-252S outside of a Stax system package, and the bundle discount might make either the SRS-3170 or SRS-2170 more appealing.

The 404 LE is probably the only Lambda model (other than LS) that I haven't heard or owned. If you want balanced, neutral, slightly more brighter sound sig, the 207 fills the job for the task. I don't care for the 307/407 or 507 models.

+1 for 207 and 252 are fine. If you want an upgrade take a better amp. This will bring better bass and more Dynamic. My Recommendation in order of FavourSRM 1 MK2 (later C Versions and pp are best) SRM-323s, SRM-313.

I may have spoken about this before, but I'm reminded of it now.  I have the srm1mk2 A version with two normal bias inputs.  I completely changed out the caps, resistors, and diodes as per spritzers  recommendation.  how would this sound in comparison to one of the later srm1mk2's?  I know they made some changes along the way, but did the sound change as well?  How different are they?

I have about $650 saved right now, but I'm not looking to get over $1,000 or so on the whole setup. So, pretty much 2170 system or a 307 + SRS252s. Maybe I'll suck it up and do 3170 if I can save up longer.

I just pulled the trigger on a SR-407 and I'm also trying to decide between the SRM-252S and SRM-323S.  This will be my first experience with STAX.  Super excited!

A certain group buy site I'm not sure I'm allowed to name or even reference here. It was an import but the 240V 323S included seems to have been converted to operate properly on 120V. A great buy for $1000 overall -- I sold the SR-307 for $350 and was able to net the 323S for $650.
 
You should easily be able to acquire a 252S with a 307 within your budget if you find them used. Don't neglect snatching up deals on the older Lambdas or amplifiers either (e.g. SRM-1/Mk2, SRM-T1, et alia).
