Sorry guys. We never had that one at $1349. It's at 1699.

You can get the HD800 from VerizonWireless (I know, odd) in the MarketPlace for $924. You need 47,600 verizon points + $924. Do the mod recently discussed on Inner Fidelity and you pretty much have a 800s.

but the HD800 isn't black (unless you got one through Colorware), and that alone accounts for 20% more betterer sound. Fact.

The problem with the Dupont mod is that you need to be French in order for it to work.

There's a very real difference in the magnets and diaphragms used in the 800S, compared to the 800, something that can't be fixed with modding (which adds its own problems by increasing distortion <60Hz, making them sound a tiny bit "flabby"). This is something most won't notice, and I'm being extraordinarily picky, but these are the cans (I've had my HD800 quite a while) that I use for retrieving audio detail, so I feel justified in my... umm... "pickyness". :)

(Sorry for the slight detour.)

Well Tyll over at InnerFidelity noted the "bloom" in the bass in the 800S and not in the 800. he pointed out that the 800 has better bass definition and with the french mod, it comes really close to the 800S by removing the 6k spike, but still retains the well defined bass. YMMV.

How's this relevant to the deal thread: for $924 and a DIY mod, you can have something very close to the sound quality of both the 800 and the 800S.

Well, the S replaced the 800 on his Wall, so even with the mods he must feel the new model is worth it, he says as much in his review. I'm not sure I'd spend nearly $1000 for cans that have been recently one-upped by a new model. To each their own, though.

There's always something better (until you get the Orpheus II :)

Sure, it replaced the 800 on the wall, but for $700 less and a little DIY work you get "For those willing to modify their existing headphones, the SuperDupont Resonator modification by Sorrodje is a worthy attempt to rid the HD 800 of the annoying spike at 6kHz, and comes quite close in effectiveness to the new HD 800 S in that regard. It also leaves the bass unchanged, allowing the listener to EQ the bass without distortion. This is a really nice mod."

Since this is the deals thread, saving $700 to get the above is a deal in my book.

here's another Sennheiser deal:

HD 600 + $150 Amazon Gift Card for $399.95 http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Professional-Headphone-Amazon-com-Greeting/dp/B0199APD94

Really only a good deal if you're a frequent Amazon shopper and in the market for the 600s.
