Does it still have warranty?
If so, I don't see any reason to get a new one over an open box.

I registered mine, I had no issues doing that.

Is this some way to get around the embargo on sales? Doesn't seem to make sense any other way. Either way, good to know, do they do similar deals for any other manufacturers?

It's a way around MAP pricing, it's also how some sellers can sell Sennheiser, Audeze, etc. for well below retail, they cut the outer seal and sell it as "open box" or "B-stock".

I just can't decide in term of sound quality between the AKG K7xx and the K712... Some say it's the same, some say it's not and the K712 still overall better but maybe not worth the extra dols :/

The K712 is brighter than the K7XX, but the K7XX and K702 65A are virtually identical.

I actually want these for bike riding.  Bright enough to possibly make a difference (hopefully for driver avoidance not targeting) and drivers which are not utter crap like the other light up options. $170   [Yeah, yeah - shouldn't be wearing IEMS at all while cycling but ...]

It was one of those 'special offer/ price updated in cart' options (ex. HE-1000 or HE-X show price the same way). Must've been a pricing error then; I noticed it at ~ 2 a.m. EST this morning. I wouldn't bother to lie about such a thing.

Yes--it went from "place it in your cart for the price" to the listing at full retail.

The problem is that the $170 ones probably don't sound much (if at all) better than the ones on Aliexpress.

I'd go with that, I'd probably even pay $1450 w/ shipping, but my neurosis doesn't allow me to pay full MAP for audio gear, it's just the way I'm wired (and I worked in high-end audio sales in college, I know the mark-ups) I'm a cheapskate. Every time I look at it I'd get annoyed.
