I've had a lot of luck with the Matrix2.  Ridiculously long battery life.  Bought my boy one as well.  Fun V sound sig and pretty durable.

HiFiMAN HE-400i headphone, amazon, $349.97 down from $499.00 plus free shipping on 'qualifying' orders (whatever that means). It's a fairly good price on a popular headphone.

I thought I saw them go for like 249 a few weeks ago though also on Amazon.

for portable price has increased to 125 $

Desktop version for 150 $ with free shipping (new item, fulfilled by amazon)

At the risk of sounding like a shill I will make another follow up post on the DAC 100.  I am having a ball with this thing.   The Audiogate 4 software (that automatically unlocks to full version with the DAC attached) makes it simple to switch between playback modes, upsample etc.  Switching playback modes is almost instantaneous.

You can export existing files that are MP3/Flac/WMA Lossless/ and DSD to most any other supported format.    JRiver and HQPlayer were mentioned earlier as software alternatives, not sure how they compare but they run $70 and $140 respectively...and Audiogate 4 comes free with the DAC. I am not experienced in this kind of software...so cannot compare benefits, but I link to the user guide below.

The DAC sounds great to me, I am feeding my Jot through the balanced outs...but the built in headphone amp sounds excellent as well (though it is not quite up to my HE-560s) Build is nice, cast aluminum and bronze spikes.  The look is odd.

NOTE: The DS-DAC 100 is purely a Windows or Mac Playback device.  It might work from a phone USB out but it is not designed for that. It works great on my Intel i5 NUC, but might not on older computers. We have not heard from other buyers so perhaps they do not share my enthusiasm. Besides the Amazon reviews for the 100, the 100M has an additional 8 reviews and is essentially the same thing without the balanced outs and volume knob.

USER GUIDE for Audiogate 4 Software   My guess is that this Version 4 is the last as their have been no recent updates.  All functions work with the exception of live recording. The DAC 10r records, the 100/100M do not.

OK, I do sound like a shill, but I am just really pleased with my new toy.
