The Deals DISCUSSION Thread (READ THE FIRST POST!!!)

Has anyone actually tried them backwards? I read on a thread that it was worth trying... On the other hand, the fact that I'm saying that makes me think they should be sold for less...

Yeah I'm totally fine with EQ'ing what you already have for best SQ but why BUY something that you know you need to EQ just to sound right when there are so many alternatives?

what else do you recommend for the price

Assuming the ~$500 Massdrop price?  HE-400i, HD650, ZMF x Vibro, Oppo PM-3, Noble 4 (or any other nice multi-BA IEM), etc etc.  Or perhaps spend a few extra bucks for an open box HE-560 from Razordog or a refurbished Oppo PM-2.  I've tried all of these and I think they all sound better than the HD700.

There are a ton of options out there that sound better to me, just depends on what you're looking for (open/closed, over ear/in ear, warm/bright, etc.)

The 650 versus 700 recommendation seems to be a common point of contention. When stacked up against the 400i's is that a common preference though? I know we saw the $400 deal on them before, I had just jumped on the 7xx's though. Would people here that are considering a ~$500 price point for their purchase hold off on the 700's for another 400i deal or something else like recommended above?

From what I've seen, at that price it's almost worth it to just save up and see if a ~1k deal on the 800's ever drops.

I'm really tempted by this deal. I doubt the price gets any better anytime soon. I'm having the itch to get a new set, but I'm perfectly content running with the 650/7xx's right now too. Did anyone else here jump into that drop?

I owned them for months and they are a nice set of cans. About the most comfortable headphones I've owned and they are well constructed.  Never had the issues many go on about personally.  I do prefer the HD650's, but that's the way my tastes run...I now use Stax 007A's and Fostex TH900's mostly...I like a bit of warmth and a bit of bass impact.  I run tubes in my amps.

I'm surprised they are as polarizing as they are...really.  I often think the forums fuel people's opinions a bit much.

I wouldn't say all those recommendations are similar sound signatures to the HD700, I just said they all sound better.  Personally I would (and did) try to find a $700 HE-560 (looks like the price went up since I got mine).  Or grab a refurbished PM-2 for $499.  The PM-2 will be a bit on the warm side of neutral and the HE-560 is a bit on the bright side of neutral.  But neither made me want to take them off after 10-20 minutes.

As always YMMV.

EDIT - Dang, I can't believe those $499 PM-2's are still in stock.  That has got to be the best headphone you can buy for $500...

I disagree here.  I had both the 650 and 700 and thought the 700 really was much better than the 650.   Its a preference thing.
