Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting these bad boys (Beyerdynamic DT880 600 Ohms), how could I tell if my laptop can power these? I have a feeling...

How much power would they need?

I listen at volumes usually lower than "normal". I have a MB and just connected the Beyers directly to see. At full blast I find the volume more than enough for my tastes.... But depends on how loud you like your music. Just my $0.02

Do you mean your laptop has 12.5 V maximum RMS audio output ?

A tenth of that is more realistic with the usual Realtek codecs. Does it include a speaker amplifier (edit: some codecs, like the ALC269, actually do, but the speaker output is normally used to drive the built-in speakers of the laptop, and it still cannot output 12.5 V, not even peak to peak) ?

Is that a lot of V?

Subjectively,
I don't like plugging my DT880/600 Ohms straight into my laptop, not enough volume, and subjectively, it just sounds awful.

If your laptop really outputs 12 Volts peak to peak out of the headphone jack, then, theoretically, this should be enough to drive a pair of DT880/600 Ohms.

I'm listening to Tech N9ne right now with the 880s and it's stupid good. My EQ is pretty bomb. Bass is just thumpin'.
