I just recently got a pair of DT800/600s from amazon, and I'm a bit concerned with the issues being brought up.
 
What is being considered sharp here? They're definitely not sharp enough to break the skin on my fingers. I wouldn't consider adjustments smooth, but looking at the design I figured that it's supposed to be at least slightly difficult to adjust over the notches.

The only reason I can think of that would cause channel imbalance - is if you don't have enough voltage swing from your amp to power these 600 ohm phones. These are seriously good phones - I really doubt it is the phones that are the issue...seriously CHILL - there is a reason they are so well respected....but they need serious power to drive these beasts

Mine have the metal fork ear piece holders with "sharp" edges, too.

You should be fine. The person who has my DT880 has the same thing on his DT770 so I don't think they are supposed to be completely smooth.

Thanks, that's kind of what I figured. If it was completely smooth, I'm not even sure they would stay in place properly.

Either the 600 ohm DT880s or DT990s are high on the list of my 2nd audiophile headphone purchase. I really want the most natural, airy yet warm and textural sound possible. The soundstage, airyness and deep bass intrigued me. I was worried that the highs would be too fatiguing because I consider my Grado Sr225is to be very burnt in and warm. I don't hear that grainy upper mid/treble spike in certain reviews of this headphone, I just hear a lot of natural sounding rolled off sweetness to the upper midrange and treble. In general, how do the headphones differ in sound?
 
Also, OP how does the XONAR essence STX fair at amplifying a 600 ohm headphone like these? I have the same card and am wondering.

I like the DT880, but I prefer the DT990 with the right tubes out of my WA3: am I the only one?
The DT990 has a better headstage, fully 3dimensional, more air between instruments, and the bass is one of the beast I've ever heard.
 
I'm using a RCA 6AS7G and a pair of Mullard CV2492 on the tube amp and my Bach sounds glorious with the DT990

Looking at some of Headroom's graphs, it appears that the DT880 is exactly what I want. 

 Just wish I had some money... I'll probably end up pairing it with the Fiio E7/E9 combo (good choice?)

I'm going to agree with this. I too like my DT880s - but I simply love the DT990s. I find the 990s more exciting - the high end is really strong - not overdone at all - acoustic guitars shine and cymbals are crisp. The lows are deep and rich - and I don't feel the mids are recessed like some do - voices sound nearly perfect. To me - I find the 880s just a bit dry...pleasant but I don't get the same feeling with the 880s that I do when I put my 990s on my head. I listen to Mullard EF91s out of my LD MKIV - great match. I'll try some other tubes with the 880s probably.

I'm thinking of picking up a 880/600 soon, and as of now I don't have any amps/source components (other than my MBP).  My apologies if this has been covered already, but are there any amp/dac combos that can be found for $200 or less used that can actually drive these?  Or would I be better off getting a dedicated amp for that price and buying a dedicated DAC in around 6 months?  My other option is to go with the HD598, as they're supposed to be easier to drive.  What would you suggest, Head-Fi?

I have the E9 (without the E7) and the dt880/600.
Despite what others say here in head-fi, I am really disappointed from this combination. I don't have any other amp to compare, but I can tell you that my Sony V6 headphones sound WAY better than the dt880 with the E9. The dt880 just doesn't sound good. The drums sound horrible, the vocals is not clear. The piano sounds are good though. I've tried several different sources. So either i got a faulty dt880 (unlikely), or the E9 is just not suitable for powering the dt880.

Did you make sure the E9 was set to "High Gain?"
