The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

The DT880 are good entry level headphones but they are in the same tier as the ATH M50X and beyerdynamic's own DT 770/DT990. The Drop exclusive Sennheiser HD58X has better treble, mids, and bass resolution.

There's no reason to buy the DT880 anymore. Well, it’s still a suitable headphone for studio work but it’s awful for recreational listening. The sound has this thin, peaky treble that doesn’t give you more detail - it’s just boosted, and dry mids coupled with non-existent bass. The DT 770 & DT 990 are sold in way more quantities for a reason.

The M50x isn’t even close to the DT 880/990 in terms of fidelity. Those are fair criticisms of the DT 880 especially on many systems. I may not be the biggest fan of the DT 880 sound signature but I always found they were capable of sounding superior to the HD 600/650 let alone the HD 58X on the right system and/or with some tweaks to alter their sound signature.

Headphone scalability is a myth that can't be scientifically proven.
There is an objective difference between being driven properly (adequate voltage delivery for high Ohm cans) and not. This is just physics. Under-driven by an unsuitable amp, the 880s (esp. 600 Ohm) sound almost unlistenable. Correctly driven (e.g. by a powerful OTL tube amp), they compete well beyond their retail price.

the 58x has bloated mid-bass, recessed upper mids, and veiled treble with a 4.5 kHz dip followed by a 5 kHz spike. Please explain to me how it has better treble, mids, and bass resolution.

Why they sounded muffled explained by stock front damping. Thick dense felt over driver. Mute!

Do not recommend using solder iron with knife tip to cut here because plastic is too thick and makes a bit of a mess. Next time would just use a small hand saw designed for the job. Grills do still fit back on, but they wouldnt be as supported. However, I plan to fill entire cavity with foam so should be okay.
