The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Sorry for asking such a common question without reading thread enough, doing that at the moment.

I've ordered DT880 250Ohm and need amp\dac advise, Sound/Price most important.

Initially looking for Audinst MX-2 for $228 also considering O2\ODAC for ~$330 but this is a bit expensive for me, Magni 2/Modi 2 for $265 looks good on price.

Is there something in between what will suit DT880 sound signature the best, around ~$260?
Currently i'm listening music(jazz, instrumental, rock) on a Takstar HI2050(also Superlux 668B and Tennmak PRO) + integrated VIA Vinyl chip-set from some premium motherboard, completely inexperienced in hi-fi.

I find the o2 and Magni too bright for the dt880. I would go with something a bit warmer if you can.

The G103 would be a great match for the DT880 IMO. I have the G109 which is its bigger brother. People say the two are very similar. They're supposed to be very neutral but warmer than things like the O2 (which I haven't tried yet). And the price has gone down. The G103 is just slightly over $200 which sounds like a really great price to me.

EDIT: Shipping would probably be a lot faster from their U.S. store (if you're in the states). Prices are a little higher there but end up being about the same with the free shipping. Their coupon code "Winter-15" still works which brings the total to $246.

I have not heard any of their Amos but they do have a loyal following and are supposed to be closer to neutral than the o2/Magni. I dont think people realize just how hot those amps are.

Thanks for advice, that's exactly i'm looking at Audinst MX-2 people say its warmer\darker compared to O2, but with smaller sound-stage.
As i said i'm very inexperienced in quality audio, every opinion is helpful.

I would like to buy something worthy but in that case i will be left with $60-80 budget for DAC, i don't think Zoom H4n or VIA chip-set output will be good enough for DT880.

Has anyone ever removed the backing on the 880/990 to make them fully open like a senny or AD 1kx/2kx. I would imagine the bass dropping more, but it would be less reflections right. I saw in the amiron thread, someone was able to remove backing off the new lineup (Home 1770 1990)  to show they are essentially same cans

There was some DT990 Pro LE discussion earlier. Considering it is $50 cheaper than the DT880, I was wondering if that price difference warrants getting the DT990 over the DT880? at least in comfort, sound quality, and cost vs performance ratio.

Is there a way to reduce the clamping force of the DT880s? I get ear pain when I use these with my glasses

Very thin wire frames that hug tight along the head and around the ear. Doesn't break the seal with any of my cans, and comfortable. Not expensive, so a couple pairs just for head-fi-ing. Use heavier plastic frames for everything else.

@2chinzz i would imagine you're talking about the pro band vs premium. I thought at first the pro clamp was tight with 770/990 but after stretching out a bit they loosened up. I prefer them to premium even. Diff between 880/990 vs 770 i also noticed the pads angled a bit (top part angled out, or in other words away from skin) vs 770 which sits flat. I think many people said this of the AT x airX series where it was angled out at top a bit. I think this is done intentionally to let some air out for more clean sound. Anyway, i would think this is good for glasses once headband is stretched out. That pro clamp can be harsh for the first month or two :p

Hi gefski,

Do you mind taking a picture so I can get a better idea of what you mean?

Are you talking about getting glasses that have a thin metal frame?

Yes, just go to your glasses supplier and try on thin wire frames until you find some that hug your temple and tuck in tight behind the ear. I found several, from cheapie to $xxx titanium. I opted for the low $ since they are only used at my HeadFi desk. Heck, you can even take a pair of cans along and see if this works for you.

No pics, I'm not a glasses model any more. :D
