You should consider Soundmagic Hp100/150.
Not as capable as DT880s but it's a pretty neutral closed back headphone, specially when compared with something like DT770

Best Luck!

I concur with this post. After comparing my soundmagic hp 150 with my friends  dt 880's, I'd bascially sum them up as a closed dt 880 with a less deep sound stage and a tad bit more subbass.

Thank you for your reply! But this would be my first full-headphone,and the brand sounds a little too anonymous for my tastes... even though i know they make the E10's. still,i'm somewhat interested in the removable cable and pricing.

There was a mod for this floating around a few years ago.

I haven't tried it myself ...

I feel like covering the grill with tape is just way to much effort to ghetto rig the DT880 to being closed. Then you lose everything that makes it the DT880. I'd just look for closed headphones if I needed no sound leak.

Thanks, i would like to try it, but as DR650SE, i could get the DT770, and be done with it.

Are the DT770 that much different? i like my headphones to be as neutral as possible, and correct whatever i feel is lacking with a bit of EQ.

I believe the DT770 use the same basic driver as the DT880, but the damping (and obviously the housing!) is different. I tried a DT770 for a short while, but didn't like it. Compared with the DT880 it sounded bassier and much more 'v' shaped: the mid-range seem thinner and more distant.

Thee's a good thread (which you may have already seen) comparing the various beyers:  http://www.head-fi.org/t/513393/guide-sonic-differences-between-dt770-dt990-models-more

The first few posts are a good read although, in my experience, the differences between the various versions of the same model (e.g. DT880 250 ohm vs 600 ohm) are overstated.

I think the only truth to the 600 ohm model being the better sounding DT880 are people's synergy with their amps and confirmation bias.

"Soundmagic". Sorry, I've never heard about this company/brand...
Although I see they are available at my location.

I'm traditionalist and I would prefer rather long market existing brand...

That's a good question. To be honest... I'm not sure. Most of the amps I'd recommend are either DIY or priced around or above $1000... at which point, you'd want to use a different headphone anyway. So that's why I'm not sure what to give you here.

Right now, I think the Leckerton UHA-6S Mk.II (not the UHA-760) is my candidate for a good solid-state amp. I think you'd want the ADA4627-1B op amp. But I'd advise against it because I have it on good authority that Leckerton Audio is going to introduce a new device soon...

Another good candidate (but I haven't listened to it yet) would be the new Schiit Audio Magni 2 Uber with the Schiit Audio Modi 2 Uber as the DAC. A friend of mine who owns the HD800 (much more troublesome treble-wise) likes that combo, so... and he's also the guy who got me into the Leckerton. I think you'd want to stay away from the Schiit Asgard 2, though.

Last but not least, another friend (this dude got my DT880 600) is enjoying the DT880 600 out of the Geek Out 450. I think that would also be a good budget option. I played around with the Geek Out 450 for a while and kinda liked its sound, but there are other things that I don't like (heat and connector placement, although the connector issue can be mitigated with the included extender).

Thanks for the recommendation. The Leckerton does look good, and it is also on Inner Fidelity's wall of fame. Looking at the specs, though, it doesn't seem to be able to drive my HE-500s well.

I am curious as to why you advise away from the Asgard 2, and why would the Magni 2 uber be superior?

Thanks again.

Here is a list of the amps being used with the 880/600s.

My 880/600s are due Monday. I'll be driving them with the Valhalla 2 and the Lyr. I have then both and I'm sure both will do the job.

I bought my 880s on Amazon.

it's legit, and cheap. haha. The premium are just more expensive because of looser clamp force, and so, more comfortable.
Want to buy mine? i'm selling my premiums, haha. It's not the 600 version though, and i think for home use with powerful amps, 600 is the way to go.

I just ordered on Amazon for the 600s. Thanks though! I was hoping for my comparison between the Valhalla 2 and lyr 2 because I have to make a decision soon! :D does one have more bass than the other?

All the Schiit amps sound about the same. No, one does not have more bass than the other. If you want more bass you will have to have a change in HP. Something like the Philips X2s have more bass than the HD600s.

i hope you are liking your dt880s. It has a certain quantity of bass, might or might not be enough for your. But "a lot of bass" is not how anybody will describe dt880 bass, and i dont know whether you want a lot of bass, enough bass, or as less bass as possible but... if you prefer a lot of bass with your music, you might want to consider cancelling your recently made order...

hehe.

No I'm gonna keep it and update you guys in a couple weeks! Thanks! Still deciding on the amp though. Will make a decision by Monday morning. Thanks again.

If you find that you need more bass, install DT770 pads. If you want your DT880 to turn into bass cannons, install Beyer's pleather pads. I do not recommend the latter, as the rest of the spectrum suffers quite a bit as a result. Good luck.
