I used his comparison videos to decide what to buy. He obviously uses a very special microphone setup there. Even the difference between HD58x and HD6xx is noticeable through DT880 even if subtle.
The interesting thing is that he doesn't have the budget many other reviewers and hit kit isn't actually that high end as even he says he's not fully happy with what he's done. But what makes his worth trusting is the fact he spends so much time tweaking the recordings afterwards to make sure they sound as close to the headphones as he can possibly get. Many others record with far better equipment than him, but don't put the time in (or have the knowledge?) to get it to sound accurate. He did a video on how this winds him up and I can understand why. I don't always agree with his impression of the sound of things, but regarding his headphone and any other recording samples he does, I don't think there is anyone better on youtube.
So 2 pages back I was praising my all-black DT880's...
Well... that was until curiosity got the best of me and I foolishly went out and bought the HD565 & HD580.
Over the past few weeks I've been comparing them extensively and... I am saddened to admit that I now really (really) dislike how these DT880's sound.
Now I know Sennheiser have fairly boosted mids, but it's also safe to say that these Beyers definitely have very thin mids that are pushed back and lack... liveliness.
Whatever the reason (being the 250ohm, the Black Edition of just plain Beyer house sound), it leaves these cans so terribly lacking, it's not even funny.
And the sad thing is, no matter how hard I try to EQ them with the Schiit Loki, it just doesn't do it for me. They don't respond half as good to EQ as the Senns do and before I know it everything just ends up being muddy and blegh.
I really wanted to like them. Both build quality and comfort are top notch... but I guess maybe they just aren't for me.
Edit: I would like to stress that this is solely my experience, with only one amp and it's solid state. So take it with a grain of salt, YMMV and tubes or a different set of ears might make a huge difference.

I'm sorry! It is frustrating when this happens. I have the Senn 560s, 660s, and 6XX. All are great headphones for sure. BUT, I love my 880's 600 ohm much more. Different sounding for sure, but I am not disappointed in any way.

Though they have been eclipsed by better cans, I gotta have the ”classics” (HD650/600, DT880 250/600, and K701 Austrian) in house! If I sell one, I just stupidly end up “re-buying” it.

I definitely know what you're talking about. I had DT880s for the longest time and thought I loved them and then I tried different headphones and realized that the DT880s probably weren't for me. Out of the "classics" I did like the K701s a lot more than the DT880s. I also was running them on a really weak chain, but anyhow...
Does your laptop not get a bit toasty covering the grill of your amp? Maybe not all amplifiers are like mine (the pioneer a-209R) but I certainly wouldn't want to cover the grill on mine as whenever it is just turned on you can feel some heat rising from the components inside.

Regarding my HD 650 “Row A” vocal presentation, yes, it’s sweet, clear, and immediate (Radka Toneff’s “Fairytales” for example). Switching to my DT 880 and immediately her voice is slightly yet obviously recessed (Row H?) Continued listening, however, really sinking into the album, shows me that her micro dynamic swings are MORE alive — the opposite of lacking liveliness. Both are fun.
Today I DIYd my old DT880 2003 model to be dual-entry.
Went for a simple 3.5mm, while using the old cable for the connection between my DT770 drivers and the 3.5mm connector.
I'm using DT770 drivers cause one of the DT880 drivers was busted
Quite happy with the outcome. It's been a REAL long time that I've heard this DT880 so I cannot really judge how much difference the DT770 drivers make but the outcome is neutral/bright.

Does anyone in this forum know if the 53mm dia felt disc can be safely peeled off of the protective paper on the 600Ω driver without tearing it? I just got a new headphone, and don't want to embarrass myself by ripping the paper off in the first week.
