In fact, listening to mine yesterday and today, still like it as a Senn alternative. In my rig, it’s a bit stark compared to my HD650, but not unnaturally bright or grating on top. Mid range behavior some find it too lean, however, myself and some others find the Senn a touch too bloomy, especially on piano. Can‘t deny the Senn’s sweetness though. I need both.
The 880 has so many points where it's better than the 600, that preferring a boring headphone just because the voice sounds forward is a bit absurd. The 880 is better at everything else.
Interesting review by Zeos. Earlier reviews of lower impedance versions were not so complimentary. I am surprised he found such a difference in the 600 ohm version. I don't know why he had distortion with his THX 789 amplifier (100mw at 600 ohm SE) which I would have thought more than adequate to drive them. The 600 ohm has a sensitivity of 98db so they're not that hard to drive. Interesting to know if anyone else thinks pairing these headphones with power amps improves their performance.
I am not surprised at all that the THX 789 didn't drive them that well. I have the SMSL SP200 which is a very similar amp. Zeos has compared the two directly in one of his earlier video reviews. When I listen to the 880/600s on high gain on the SP200, they are completely unremarkable - nothing special at all. It's not that the amp can't drive them to the right loudness. I think it can but there is a lot missing compared to my Emotiva Bas-X A-100 with the speaker taps installed. With this amp they come to life in an amazing way. They become 3 dimensional and very engaging.
This past week I received the Valhalla 2 to use with my 800S but was shocked at how well it paired with the 880/600. Wow! I'm almost tempted to say they sound just a bit better with the Valhalla. I will need more time to decide. Listening to EDM, the bass hit so deep (with some help from the Loki) but the clarity and detail was still present.
I think people who write these headphones off just don't have the right amp to drive them. I literally just sold my HD800S because it could not compete with my DT880/600. Blasphemy!
I do not understand the electrical basis for why an amplifier that makes the headphone sound extremely loud does not drive it properly. My amplifier has an output of 5.27Vrms, and the normal listening volume is 20% of the windows volume. At 60% it becomes painful. And according to Zeos, I don't push it well enough. Any logical explanation?
My totally ignorant comparison would be cars...
Think of the least and most powerful cars you have ever driven.
Both will do certain speeds but the ease with which the more powerful one does it will be relatively effortless.

should I buy a Emotiva BASX A100 or send my dt880 out for a recable ? a100 is cheaper but i get a new cable included with the addition of converting the headphones into Balanced
