The Beyerdynamic DT250 Thread

Someone in this thread mentioned that his headset was bass light.
That is obviously a personal appreciation but I do think the headsets (DT280/DT29x) have a different frequency response from the headphones (DT250/DT252).
"

Finally I've got my pair of DT 250 / 250 Ohm. I've already owned a pair of DT 294 (with microphone) and I took of the microphone and sealed the mounting holes with glue. Some time back I've asked in this thread if the DT 250 were bass light. Now I can confirm that DT 250/250 have different response than the DT 294/80. Of course the 250 are a bit quieter because of the higher impedance but they also have more linear bass response. The DT 294 have a rolled of low end. Now I've noticed that for voices, I even prefer the rolled of DT 294 but for 90% of the music, the DT250 are the better choice for me.

I don't know exactly if the driver is different. I've expected an additional bass reflex hole in the DT 250. The only thing I've noticed is that the DT 294 has one open slot on the sides and the DT 250 has two. see the pictures

DT250 is definitely a best kept secret. I use mine whenever I'm testing new vacuum tubes so just in case something goes wrong I won't risk my expensive ZMF Eikons. But then after listening for a while I forget to switch to the ZMFs because I enjoy the Beyers so much!

The DT 150 drivers also look like that.

Those are some seriously good drivers... Better than the Sennheiser HD 650 drivers for sure

I thought about DT-29x as a backup pair for DT-250, but the mic has rather poor specs, and there's even higher chance that the left side will be unbalanced. Also the immense price difference.
So I stayed with regular DT-250 and put a $2 DIY mic with retrofitted Primo capsule. Works wonders at just 5V plugin power.

BTW, my early Aug-2017 DT-250 pair just celebrated over 2000 hour uptime
It's used between 4 to 16 hours a day. Only once I had to fix the connector - and that was my poor soldering. Every 3 or so months I wash the velour pads in warm water to get the sweat out and restore the feel.

Just got the 250ohm version to compare against the 80ohms.Still think the the 80ohm is brilliant, but to my ears the 250ohm is just that bit better in detail.I was worried my hrt microstreamer wouldnt be able to drive the 250ohms,but they are fine and volume is more than needed.
Have sold my Shure srh1540s already, and the 80ohms are also up for sale now.
These headphones just let me enjoy the music, and I forget I have them on sometimes.

Asymcon, thanks for that.I just assumed that anything over about 200ohms would need a more powerful amp.Was already looking at getting something like the odac2,but can now stick with what I have already.
Yes, with the sensitivity in the picture, it's much easier to make accurate estimates. 600Ohm at 105dB/mW is going to be actually louder than say 55Ohm at 88dB/mW, and those 55Ohm .
As with DT-250, 250Ohm, their sensitivity is actually 100dB/mW, so a typical 0.5V source (phones, mp3 players) will actually drive them fine to 103dB peak. That's more than enough.

That's why DT-250 is such a wonderful set - even at low voltages there's plenty of volume, and at the same time, no damping issues with source thanks to high impedance.

I'm using my 250Ohm pair with Sansa Clip Zip and never ran into problems with insufficient volume.

IMHO compared to the K550, the DT250 sound more natural, less artificial. The DT250 are having the sweet highs that are detailed but not harsh at all. The soundstage is narrower, that’s true. I think the K550 was stronger in the subbass quantity.
The earpads are much smaller on the DT250 and the fit is much firmer (but still comfortable)

Almost by chance I have discovered how well the humble Beyer DT250 (250 Ohm version) works with the Chord Mojo. Good tonal balance, plenty of detail and genuine stage depth. There is some real synergy here.

I was going to sell them- now I think I’ll make them a new dedicated portable cable. Probably 6ft of Mogami 2534 (that’s what I’m using with my DT150s). Any other recommendations?
