So, are there any "USB Specialists" here in this thread?
While I could buy a USB 2.0 "A" to "B" cable, modify it, and try a test - I was wondering whether someone could tell me if the +5V line is required, when connecting a USB DAC to a PC, if both devices are wall-powered?
In other words, if the cable is like this, will the PC connect to the DAC, and audio data pass through?
[1] +5V ___ x ___ +5V [1]
[2] D- ___________ D- [2]
[3] D+ __________ D+ [3]
[4] GND _______ GND [4]
Or, does the +5V play a part in the handshake & connection set-up phase, before the audio data can pass through?
I expect that if a "USB Powered" device, like a portable DAC, was connected - then the +5V would be required - either through the cable, or injected via a "Y" charging cable.

Wow! I thought I remembered this. March 2020, when we were all getting very worried, the word of the week was Dance, not Dancing. Tom was the first to post after @groucho69 announced the word. So, less than a month before covid took him, this is what Tom, HungryPanda, my husband posted....
https://www.head-fi.org/threads/the-audio-lounge.855661/page-1514#post-15518205
On the next page, I posted two Leonard Cohen songs. One is in my signature. The other was the closing song during Toms funeral.
I will share a couple with Dancing later tonight or tomorrow.

If the DAC is USB powered, yes you'll need the +5V wire. If it's AC powered you can remove it. This is a way that a lot of people stop USB noise on thier systems. So, are there any "USB Specialists" here in this thread?

Well, just got some money back from selling my wheels/tires that I had as a summer set-up on the Honda as well as getting a refund back on the unused portions of the warranties. Have about $2500 that needs to be allocated. Not a huge amount but good enough to buy a set of winter tires/wheels (the WRX came with summers only) and a spare tire (that was absent, though I can't understand it really, fix-a-flat won't work on sidewall blowouts). I'm going to need this stuff in a few months.
This is a premium version and the stock stereo, while not Harman Kardon, still sounds ok. My desire is to upgrade all the speakers, add an amp and subwoofer but will leave the head-unit as it is an 11" iPad like piece that has climate, Nav/system displays and back-up cameras built-in (too much custom dash work to install something else). The Alpine system I had in the Honda sounded great and would like to re-cereate that. That may need wait until late in the year, but would be excellent to have it for the summer.
I know I wasn't supposed to buy any gear this year but since getting the Vali 2, tube rolling has been fun. Also recently got a Senn Momentum 4 BT headphone for work but sounds pretty decent with music too (it's only been a day or so so still deciding if I want to keep).
Sorry for the rant, just got off of some long conference sessions (one was 4 hours) and I'm kind of spent. Sipping a nice Juicy Hazy IPA.
Cheers to all.

1) Go Focal with the car speakers, if you choose that.Well, just got some money back from selling my wheels/tires that I had as a summer set-up on the Honda as well as getting a refund back on the unused portions of the warranties. 2) A nice tube amp that doesn't cost an insane amount is the Willsenton R8. Add a HE-Adapter, and some nice speaker wire, and you have a killer headphone amp.
Yummy, Juicy is great stuff.

my "official" WOW contributions for this week...
I will always use any excuse to share my love of Fred Eaglesmith. I have been a fan since 1996 when I first saw him at the Ann Arbor Ark. Saw him many times after that including a show in 2005 during one of Toms visits to Michigan. He had the most entertaining live shows back then. Tom and I also saw him at The Borderline in London (UK) during one of his European tours. He is Canadian but has roots in the Netherlands.... his given name is Elgersma.
Dancin on the Bar from the album Falling Stars and Broken Hearts 2002
Next is Chris Isaak - Dancin' live version
Finally, A.A. Bondy - I Can See the Pines Are Dancing

@jerick70 is correct except that some self-powered DACs look for the 5V to "detect the signal" so won't do anything without it.So, are there any "USB Specialists" here in this thread?

For example: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/watts-up.800264/page-115#post-15551150
(in that post, the desktop DACs seem to use the 5V to "power the galvanic isolation" so...even less straight-forward...)
