IMO getting the AD700s after getting the HD650s would be a step down.

Using SineGen the AD700 sounds relatively flat above 500Hz to me. The only major dip I noticed was between 4000Hz and 7000Hz (not sure of the exact numbers). It also might have peaked a tiny bit around 8000Hz but then rolled off rather quickly. I not very good at discerning volume differences at high frequencies though. My ears are tired right now though so Ill see if I can get more accurate results later.

Edit: There are a dips around 1100Hz, 1700Hz, 3000-4000Hz, 5000-7000Hz, 8000Hz and 9000Hz-11000Hz. Can't tell if there are any major spikes as I have difficulty discerning volume increases at high frequencies.

Amps are over rated for SOME headphones. For example when people say that DT880's and HD580's NEED a dedicated amp, that's going a bit too far. They don't need an amp. They produce perfectly good sound without one.

But an amp certainly does improve things.

it depends on the ohms. The 600ohms suck pretty bad without an amp. I would definitely say these(600ohms) need some sort of amplification to sound decent. 250 Ohm version would definitely benefit with an amp, but does not need one. 32 ohm version wouldn't really benefit from an amp. An EQ would be enough.

Well yeah. I haven't heard the 600 ohms. But both my HD580's and DT880 2003 250 ohms sounded fairly good without an amp. It was the upgrade to a better source that made most of the difference for me.

I went with the Ultrasone HFI-780, having been called "the best cans under $350" or something similar somewhere I read. Looking forward to getting them, dreading the break in of the head strap to my giant noggin, lol.

I'm breaking the rule here by asking before searching.. but:
Has anyone ever recabled the AD700s? Does it really added noticeable difference?

That was the next step I took after my AD700 (which i still have for gaming). You will not be disappointed. I love my HFI-780 especially when you can get a $250 can for $170 shipped from RMC Audio if you tell them to beat Northern sound and lights price I believe it was still a higher actual price at RMC audio but because there was no shipping fee it was $10 cheaper.

How do they compare to your AD700's?
