The Astell & Kern AK120
May 19, 2013 at 12:38 AM Post #421 of 7,071
A friend of mine happen to get a set of the AK120 and mentioned, the AK100 with vorzuge duo sounds better than the AK120.
Though once the AK120 is paired with the amp, it sounded not only clean but very "powerful".

Seems to be quite consistent with the impression here as well.

While AK120 may not exceed the DX100 in SQ, it either matches or nearly matches and in a different presentation (musical vs clinical).
However, paired with an amp, would assume it takes the SQ further than the DX100. This is based on the awe struck response i've been seeing.

Now.. if only something can be done about that price.

I am really hoping that I do not need an amp for the Ak120, out of 100% of the time I go out only 5% of the time I take up an amp with me, lets all hope AK120 a match made in heaven for IEM/CIEM.

Specs sure don't tell the full story, but I kind of doubt that with its not low enough output impedance. DX50 may be single DAC WM7840, but OI <0.5Ω. AK120 announced with OI <3Ω, but a german test measured ≈5Ω.

lets see, there is no rush, i can happily listen to RWAK before making my next choice :)
mind this i do not to overpay for Vorzuge or 627 amp which are not cheap at all, my T1 taught me a lesson, great amp does not have to be expensive :-D

If I could find a way to remove the hiss from my MHd-Q7 I honestly do not need any other amp. I have finally found an amp that I really like and its only problem is its major problem which is the hiss. :frowning2:

audionewbi, this is expensive, still over 300$ and looks a bit bulky to me but may be i am mistaken on its size. yeah hiss must be annoying, my T1 is gladly quiet, love it a lot and impossible to fault for the price. i would agree with reviewers saying T1 pushes it into 500$ league if you need only amp without balanced socket.

I can now join the club. I have a modded AK100 now. Pretty happy with the sound quality and I promptly sold off my HP-P1.  With a Pico Power it is fantastic, the latter removing the congestion I get with complex music and full-sized headphones.  Now to figure out how to copy playlists to it...

Someone had mentioned making a script to bypass that mess, earlier on in the AK100 thread. Maybe you can do a search and dig it up.

The Vorzuge, SR71b, iQube, or 627 are not overpriced. You can ask Sprks01. He is the owner of Tralucent Audio and even he will confirm that those amp is worth it .

I can't link right now but as I recall it something like 4.7 including his 'crappy' cables which can add that .7 ohm. It's likely close to 4 ohms which I'd have no issue using with any IEM in the high 20 ohm range or above.
