Special song to test headphone soundstage?

Omg, I clicked the link while wearing my Sony Ma900 and it literally scared the crap out of me...

Oh yeah, the soundstage on MA900 is amazing.

Any decently recorded binaural recordings will do very well in soundstage and imaging. They are great for testing out the spacial capabilities of headphones, since they are designed for headphone listening (by using omni-directional mics and such).

The intro of 'Black and White' by Michael Jackson. A son is listening to a cassette and dad is banging on the door. Great binaural stuff.

What's awesome for soundstage you ask? Well, I'd say "Black Magic Woman" by Santana most definitely. Amazingly designed sound staging in the first minute or two.

I think everyone should check out the new Head-Fi/Dr.Chesky's Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc...

http://www.head-fi.org/t/715795/dr-cheskys-ultimate-headphone-demonstration-disc-head-fi-tv

In addition to that "disc" (available on HDtracks with a 20% Discount to Head-Fi'ers), there are some awesome recommendations in that thread as well.  Especially the Free Binaural Downloads offered up by member "immersifi"!  Check it out!

Also see my Post (#921) here regarding the "1997-1998 IASCA Competition Disc" that has a precise "Stage Map" for each musical track to show the exact stage placement of each vocal and instrument that was recorded...

@BB: Very, very cool of you to sing my praises! Thanks again for the props.

I have been somewhat remiss in adding more binaural content to the immersifi soundcloud presence, but now that the crazy end-of-school-and-graduation season is drawing to a close, perhaps I'll raid the vaults and post some more binaural a cappella as well as symphonic recordings that I have done over the years. I really should have another look-see in the archives...

Question: Would there be any interest by the Head Fi'ers in hearing more environmental / natural sounds done in binaural? I'm only asking because the tone of this thread seems to be about imaging and soundstage. If so, just let me know - I know I have some unusual stuff in archive, and I could dust some of them off and post them - in flac as well (these would be in addition to music tracks that I would also post).

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

Thanks! I, for one, would love to listen to anything that you feel would be "cool" to hear! :D

I have a FLAC of Kurt Cobain unplugged in NY. That is my go to album for testing.

OK BB, I'll start perusing the vaults...

In the mean time, this track (for those who have not looked through the links that I posted in the Chesky Binaural thread) is a pretty good test of soundstage. As far as the mix, it's predominantly binaural, however, I also used a tiny bit of a stereo mic pair of my own design folded-in. There's not much of the latter, but I felt like adding it to the mix due to where I had the mics placed.

Lots of dynamic range in this one.
Also, no artificial reverb etc was applied to this track.

The mannequin head and stereo pair were centered on the Band (Ann Arbor Huron High School Band, Stephen E. Roberts, Conductor) in an amphitheater, and the left-to-right placement is pretty dramatic. Here are the links for the two versions - flac, and 320 kbps mp3 (but PLEASE...don't stream these, download them and listen to those (don't use the site's streaming player):

and here is the 320 kbps version:

So...download and have a listen.

Mark
