I'm not finding the treble an issue through the Chord Hugo. Very pleased with these. Great detail, pretty linear, and open sounding for a closed phone

Mine are growing on me a lot, now I've added a bit of damping. It is hard not to want to listen with them especially given the comfort.
Same here:
I applied some Dynamat as shown above. It was easier than I thought but it still took like 2 hours (I'm slow but steady).
I'm not hearing drastic changes. It's hard for me to tell what has changed without direct A/B comparison. At first I thought the bass became too tame and soft after the dampening, but I was away from home for a few days so I was listening out of my tablet instead of my desktop amp/DAC. I have now gotten a chance to hear it on my home setup and want to say that the bass is still there but with less boom on the low end and that vocals have more focus, but I can't be sure. I'm a big believer that the brain gets accustomed to sound so I feel that these slight modifications may have virtually no impact or very little. What I can say, however, is that the sound is still delicious.
So, if you want to know if your Z7 is worth modding...don't ask me...yet, at least. I'm nowhere near a seasoned audiophile so this is the best input I can give thus far regarding dampening on the Z7. I wish I could say the Dynamat with the Z7 made a world of difference, which it may to some ears, but to me not so much. I will continue to listen and enjoy the heck out of my pair.
EDIT: words.

Aside from a more silver cable most other mods would just control the bass. Other than that you would have to mess with the paper/foam damping around the driver which would be irreversible.

Eeek! I'll just live with them as is, I don't mind the bass its got a real airy pressure feel to it.

Finally I had my first sessions with them yesterday, listening to them via the Iphone 6.
They lack some bite/aggressiveness and extension, they're darker than all my other phones but yet they have this smooth character that I miss from the others. You can basically endlessly listen to them with 0 fatigue and that outstanding comfort. a few pros/cons, as it's too early to tell more about them.
+soundstage: angled drivers really help in imaging and these phones image well with a fairly open soundstage. No "phantom" center problems as with many other headphones.
+smooth, easy presentation that should never cause any form of fatigue at all
+beautifully crafted, very clean and precise, very well built. Good ol' Sony. I think many companies should learn from them, especially Beyer.
+enormous comfort, just use them as a hat. You look stupid but man, that comfort....
-Bass isn't as controlled as I'd wish. I can feel the air moving but there's better impact in my collection. I like it much better than the bass of the HD650 though (+imaging).
-lack of bite makes a few genres less involving but that's to be expected with that dip and the general tonality of these phones.
I will listen to them for a few days and then let them mod by Mr.Neumann + measurements.

I had only a super short listening in a store in Bangkok so i wont comment on the sound besides that it was laidback.
However, guys, comfort wise they were great. What good is great sound if the head/ears/whatever hurts after a few songs.

Looking online now that stock has filled the price of these seem a tad cheaper.
While they are not perfect they have impressed me multiple times. I don't think any headphone will ever truly do everything right. So I'm content with the $800au I paid.
V6 + Z7 are a decent combo.

So what about using them for gaming. Yes, I know the open ones are better, but what about this one?
I have read, that it is good in positioning (not wide in soundstage, but with a good center positioning).
I have analytical headphones, but I think that the Sony could be a fun bomber!? To bad, that testing is not an option in the middle of nowhere (and I dont like to test things and send it back, not fair).
What are your experiences in gaming (esp. shooter like COD)?
The build quality and optics still impresses me.
Mr. Neumann tuning sounds interesting, did he already mod a Z7? Can he mod HPs to gaming specialists?
At the Moment I think, that it is more important, that a headphone makes fun, than it is maximum neutral.

After following this thread for months I finally saw these at the Sony store. One, the dude could not work the amp which is very large, two, they are not bass capable ie. slam worthiness, three, the plastic used in making the cups seemed very thin. Three disappointments for me equals three strikes. Ill save for THE KING. Mike and Nomax even if you are brothers from another mother it is not nice to keep secrets and to tease us unless you are willing to spill the beans. Out with it.
Under appreciated? JVC SZ2000 and SZ1000. Dual drivers that perform.

Sorry but the cups are not made of plastic, are you sure you were listening to the Z7? Also it sounds like you did not have someone set up a proper listening session for you.

They aren't plastic, however they can be easily mistaken as plastic

dweaver is right, if the setup isn't done right in the store, very hard to give a verdict. I personally take it a step further, if I can't hear it on my own setup I will not call it. However I did hear Z7 on my rig and I thought they were wonderful, and I don't even own them......... Yet
