Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I definitely think it does for many people. Not sure why though, Sony being mainstream and huge just means they have huge amounts of money to throw into developing a top end headphone.

Indeed, it’s like the preference for unknown, “indie” artists has carried over to the equipment realm despite the fact R&D and engineering and are an order of magnitude bigger factors here.

hi there, i'm a malaysian too, how do i get that cheap ta-zh1es amp? pm me please?
i have a friend working in china. he was able to buy it from one of the taobao sellers and ship it for me. the second option would be to purchase from tmall for a slightly higher markup and pay customs too which will probably be almost as high as getting it locally? idk.

Does the thought of Sony being too “mainstream/corporate” an entity negatively bias people’s perceptions?

Right, they would rather have a headphone built in a dark garage by amateurs who are true artists. They trust a company with 3 years experience because our little hobby is a small club of enthusiasts. When after you hold the MDR-Z1R you start to notice a multitude of highly technical fabrication and design ideas which could only be made by sophisticated methodology. Still folks want that high school woodshop vibe?

Thought they sounded close to the pair I heard with 200 hours at 100. But it seems anywhere from 50 to 200 hours is good? When I purchased my pair I opened the box and before hearing them put a pair with 200 hours in my ears, as I wanted to hear them burned in. Then I put the new pair with zero hours in. 200 hours makes the bass smoother, as well as an interesting effortlessness to everything?

It depends on the type of signal you are feeding them and the level you set it at. Is that 200 hours of loud edm music that you used to loosen up the bass? I would put in another 200 hours with pink noise, slightly above the level at which you usually listen. This expands the soundstage.

Actually I made a mistake thinking this was the IER-Z1R thread? Haha. The MDR-Z1R sounded slightly different after about three days....about 72 hours...if I remember right? I had no burned in pair for reference. Though there are people in this thread suggesting long burn in periods.

I'm already digging these Z1R much more then my LCD-XC. Bass is miles better, much more nuanced and hits harder. Anyone know the ideal burn in time for the Z1R's?

I felt the sound settled down (in a positive way) after a week or so (in 24/7 mode). So my personal take-away was at least give it a week (100 hours?) for starters.

Thanks for the replies guess i have some more listening to do, i'm curious about the Sony TA-ZH1ES how does it pair with the Z1R and other high end cans? I saw a few deals on them and was wondering it would be a noticeable upgrade over my Oppo HA-1 or if i'll just be wasting my money?

It pairs very well with the Z1R as they were designed to go together

Interesting...you must not have liked them enough to 'gamble' on them holding together.

True. The LCD-MX4 are just another league for me. Better in every way. There was no head time with Z1Rs after getting the MX4s.
More accurate, bigger, richer planar sound (those larger drivers!), open and more liquid and transparent sound...

Basically trying to chalk up reasons to sell them. I do understand, once a new better kid arrives it's hard to care for the other ones.
We all just have one pair of ears after all.
Not everyone is in the game to collect gears that do similar things.

any up to date impressions of the sony mdr z1r with chord hugott2/mscaler? any detail here would be great.

also what does everyone think about the argument which states that it's best to stay away from big corporate names when choosing headphones and stick to the smaller specialist companies like audeze and mr speakers? the argument here is that the sony and audio technica type headphones are not really any good in comparison to the small companies.
