Maybe I am being overly critical... However, the build quality of the demo Focal Utopias I have seen so far are definitely not in line with the MSRP of 4 grand.
While sound is highly subjective, highly dependant on individual tastes and preferences (which I won't go there... Not that they sound bad, just not to my liking). On less subjective topics like design & construction, I don't think it's unrealistic to have high expectations at these prices.
On the bright side, at least they aren't compared to Citroëns. Haha...
The D8000s are definitely under rated. Final doesn't have that same marketing clout (thereby less fanboys) and I would imagine availability for demo is scarce in the western hemisphere.
They were stating 1-3 months, up until yesterday. ( They did have stock of one, in the last two weeks, which sold, with "more on the way". ) It does seem unlikely they will carry more stock ??
Sony NA bought that last large allocations because they still have lots of dearlers asking for it when other countries territories have slowed in sales substantially.
Our first month of the Utopia launch was roughly 100-150 a month and often more. I think we hit 1000 at 4 months of sales. My happiness doesn’t involve sales. I get happy developing and designing gear for manufacturers. I’m more into creating the product than worrying about sales.

No, not to my ears. I took all the upper frequencies out of it. Then I slowly adjusted the knob until there was treble presence that I liked. It turned out to be around 1 o'clock on the dial.

I've said this before but I'll say it again, the best sonic signature I have experienced w/ the Z1R is a limited feedback class A 300B tube amp... it's a match made in heaven.

The Sony's don't need much Eq'ing to be honest. The little tone control adjustments I made I can definitely hear the improvements between having it on and using the pass through on the Loki.

More transparent = less of its own sound introduced into the mix and the sound staging is definitely better on the Sonys by a good margin. Plus, I can't really consider the TH900s as closed back because they let sound in like an open headphone. The TH900s don't sound as good as even the much cheaper Purple-hearts (based on the TH900s and quite a bit less $$$); which is why in the end I sold them as I could have an equally impressive built headphone with smoother treble and overall SQ for less money. Weird as we hear the Utopia pretty much equally the same?
the z1r and th900 have distinct sound signatures to my ears. i've no doubt that i would enjoy them both for the coloration that they impart to the sound. having heard and compared them, i couldn't quantify one as being "more transparent" than the other because neither has a fr approaching flat. i also don't recall the z1r having a noticeably more spacious soundstage than the th900. i would describe them as comparable in that department. while the th900 doesn't provide much in the way of isolation from outside noise, it is still a closed-back headphone. but if someone is looking for a closed-back headphone that also provides effective noise attenuation, then i would recommend that they look elsewhere. i've not heard the purple-heart so i can't comment on how it compares to the th900. i doubt that we hear the utopia "equally the same", but we both regard it highly nonetheless. it seems that we may hear the z1r and th900 somewhat differently, however.
