Now I remember that too with the Discmans, I had no idea what the optical one was for though. None of my sound cards have ever had optical out so I've only used it with DVD players > receivers.
I really like the solid 4.4mm connector and I'm happy it is finally becoming more common these days with portable and desktop gear. iFi have finally adopted it too - I loathed the pigtail I had to use with my xDSD to achieve balanced output.

I used the optical out on the cd Walkman first with iBasso D1 and then iBasso D10 portable dac/amps as my travel rig for several years

how u do it?

There is a file in the installer, SWUpdate.xml, it's done through that file. The external tuning for DMP-WM1 consists simply in the external tuning used for the DMP-Z1 firmware installation. This was included in order to get as close as possible to the Z1 sound. However, external tunings are bringing only a small change in the sound signature. Without the DMP-WM1 firmware itself, this sound would not be possible with the external tuning alone.

MrWalkman has many times stated that he does not want to go into details with what he does and how he does it

Well, he asked about the external tuning stuff, and others talked about these tunings before (with more or less true information).

I suggest people here sticking to what Mr.Walkman has created, any messing with internal files will not bring good results. In fact, Mr.Walkman did not even touch the file

I am using, too, a 1Tb for more than a year, though it takes a too long time to update the WM1A Library when you insert such micro SD, if you change often between 4 or 5 SD cards in the WM1A.
Sony still stays better and faster than my Fiio M11 and Hiby R6Pro to update the library, but it's too long in all cases.

I am hoping that a 2TB micro SD will arrive on the market for helping to solve this issue. Basically, for some years, I need more or less 1,6TB hires DSD/Flacs files and it takes a too long time to change SD cards. Or let's hope one day a WM1A-II comes out with a 4Tb NVME SSD and BT5.0 for Qobuz via smartphone.
