Regarding the sound, you'd get improved caps for both the balanced and single-ended amps, bigger caps on the power supply part, plus another supercap, which would make more instant power available when needed by the amp. There's also better internal wires, as well as a bigger battery, allowing for up to ~50-60 hours of playback.

You need to take it back to factory before installing WalkMan One and the warm sound signature.

ok i have a stock revert file, so go back to stock then flash the warm or something else to do?

If you have the stock revert package, I would recommend using that one. That package will get you back to the stock firmware. You can confirm that you are back on the stock firmware by checking the Unit Information menu, where you should no longer see "DMP" etc.

After that, download the Walkman One firmware from this page: https://www.nwmods.ml/p/walkman-one-for-wm1az.html

In the downloaded archive you will find the required installation package, as well as the tunings and installation instructions.

Code:
## Installation:

1. Connect the player to your computer using the USB cable, and make sure that
the Mass Storage mode is enabled;
2. Run "Walkman_One_WM1_(19_09).exe" from the "Installation" folder, and follow the on-screen instructions;

- The player should restart into the update mode, and the update bar on the player's
screen should fill up to the end before the player restarts again.
- If the update bar on the player's screen does not reach the end, make sure that
you are on the stock firmware before trying to install this! Check if you have
another custom firmware already installed in the Unit Information menu in the
player's menu.
- When first starting up after installing the firmware, your player will reboot once,
automatically, during the boot animation. This is normal.

3. Proceed to install the WM1Z external tuning (located in the same "Installation" folder), or choose
another sound signature in the settings file, restart the player, and then install the corresponding tuning.

- To confirm that a tuning was successfully applied, you can check the boot log file
or the Unit Information menu on your player - if the tuning would not be installed,
you would see a message in this menu, saying "External tuning not applied!".

Was able to borrow a friend's Windows laptop today (I'm an Apple guy, but the switch to Apple Silicone admittedly has been a bit of a transition because I refuse to buy Parallels for Windows VMs) and switched from MX3 to J3 as multiple others have done.

LOL....I actually had to read instructions as this was the first time I've switched anything since Late September 2021.

Anyway, my auditory memory is not better than anyone elses', and it takes too long to swap between the WM1 versions to attempt any kind of comparison, but J3 sounds fine to me.

You have to follow the propper revert steps for the fw you have installed on your player and this is usually a 2 step operation

Please read the info about reverting back to the stock firmware, here: https://www.nwmods.ml/p/faq.html#stock_reverting

After reading the info carefully, you'll see that each custom firmware version has its own installer that needs to be run if you want to revert to the stock firmware, you cannot just try to install the official 3.02 firmware from Sony. You can find past StockRevert packages for the WM1A/Z, here.

Please read the info first! Also read the info from the Walkman One firmware archive after you'll download it. It's important!

You have to follow the propper revert steps for the fw you have installed on your player and this is usually a 2 step operation

Also check the instructions of the DMP-WM1 FE firmware, that can be noticed in the photo. Always save the necessary files & info about reverting back to stock after installing a custom firmware.
