I feel you get that sense with the sound stage due to the better highs and therefore more air and a sense of it being holographic. The micro details make the soundstage very well defined but i think the stage was deeper in FE(classic version). The dynamism was already very good with FE and that has been taken up a notch is what i feel. Please take these impressions with a pinch of salt as these are very initial and done by casual listening.

I feel this. Seems like the classic has a deeper sense of stage compared to plus. For the the more upfront feel, more holographic, and slightly more treble, the plus is the way to go. At least that's how I'm hearing it with my setup.

That's terrible - was it a warehouse deal? I'd go straight to the customer service chat and get a refund. If you are in Europe, Amazon Spain have it in stock at a good price.

Yes, it was a warehouse deal. The WM1A was listed as used but as new with damaged box. I’m chatting to Amazon at this moment to get a refund arranged.

Testing the new firmware and so far I definitely find it brighter again - this is mostly as a comparison to my ZX507 and switching between device with same IEM and album playing. I find it's better for spacious ambient music, femal vocals, accoustic etc - I definitely lean more to the ZX507 for anything more beat-driven (house, techno, IDM etc) in electronic music, the warmer signature I find suits genres like that better. To be considered while testing, my ZX300 was mostly played over the last few years via the 3.5 jack and has clocked up many hours of play - the ZX507 I have since Christmas but definitely gone beyond 200 hours now and 99% play has been via balanced.

I managed to get a full refund but it will take a week before it goes back into my bank account. Honestly this was a nightmare finding no WM1A in the box and it nearly gave me a panic attack. Even though I’ve got the refund I’m not a bit put off from buying from Amazon as this was my first purchase with them.

Yeah that's awful, I can imagine it was horrible - especially when looking forward to it's arrival. I find refunds tend to arrive back faster than they typically suggest - 5 days seems to be the max. Revolut on the other hand are incredibly fast (as are I'm sure others in that space such as N26) - I have had refunds processed one day and back to my Revolut the next day, for that reason and security (i.e. I only transfer the funds I intend to spend), I only use Revolut now for all online purchases.

I got my TA dac/amp, MDR-Z1R and 1Z as Amazon Warehouse deals from UK back in 2017 with no problems. The same with the Sony PS-HX500 record player

Perhaps I was just unlucky. However, Amazon UK should of checked the box before dispatching it to me which obviously they didn’t. At least I’m getting a refund even though it won’t be in my bank account until next week. I will have to wait until the refund goes into my account before I think about buying the WM1A again.

Be happy you're getting a refund. It's part of the reason I've bought plenty from Amazon. I got the MDR-1AM2 through warehouse deals and no problems.

It happened to me before, with a pair of Sony ier m7, warehouse deal, inside the box there was a pair of Sony h3 headphones, amazon was quite prompt to solve the deal, as well it happened with not 1 but 2 pairs of used xb90ex (one had a faulty driver the other didn’t work at all) I was so angry but amazon Japan as well was prompt to solve the situation

Yeah, it’s good that Amazon was prompt to solve the situation. Nothing worse than getting the wrong item or even worse (like what happened to me) receiving an empty box.

I looked at my order invoice and my refund has appeared underneath in green letters but it’s processing at the moment. I’m really worried there might be a problem getting my refund even though it’s processing. One thing that’s baffled me is that they didn’t ask for the empty Sony box to be returned.

That doesn't meant that the "Plus" mode won't sound better - if you didn't try it yet, you can't know

I would say that Plus might be more accurate. The soundstage can still extend very nice if the song calls for it.

Bad luck... In any case, you shouldn't avoid Amazon, they're really reliable usually, and they will help anyway, like they already did with you. Bought my Z7M2 and WM1A via Amazon.

Don't overthink it, there won't be any issue now after they've initiated it.

I'm listening at the moment from the A55 with the Plus mod, to the Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pro. I have to set the volume to around 100, but it sounds very good. This little player is just amazing for its price.
