Yes i know that. I was coming from macbook, iPods and iPhone which left me no choice until now. Now i have a samsung netbook, nexus 5 and sony a15, so i could go with flac, but i dont feel like switching right now.

edit: and i dont see an alternative to itunes right now.

All the A10's: A15, A16 and A17 play ALAC too

i know, i know. all my 16 bit and 24 bit files on my a15 are alacs.

So the problematic files are MP3's? or also alac

FLAC tags are vorbis comments and ALAC is iTunes tags (MP4), the variations occur with mp3

@lo-fi-head what do you think of the Sound quality of Walkman A15 vs iPod classic (unamped both).

I had an iPod classic and then a Fiio x3 first gen (still have it) before the A17.

The ipod SQ unamped sounded neutral but it has something that makes the music sound soo bland, lifeless and sooo boring

then it died after a fall, everybody knows HD's turned on + a fall = bye bye

Then got this Fiio x3, it was waaay better than the iPod SQ, wider soundstage, better warm analogue like sound

then my fiio x3 bricked after a firmware update, and i was givena  replacement kudos to fiio.

so while i was desperated to get music I bought the A17 from sony de mexico. The sound quality is far the best i've ever heard from most daps i've owned including past walkmans

from left  the best sq and right most is the worst SQ

NWZ-A17 > Fiio X3 (1st gen) > NWZ-X1060 > NWZ-A818 > NW-E507 > iPod classic

then storage space best to worst

A17 (192GB) > iPod classic (160GB) > Fiio x3 (128GB) > A818 (8GB) > E-507 (1GB)

cover art problems occur with self-ripped files only, i think (cd to alac 16/44); i never cared about cover art file type and size, because iTunes and iDevices read them all. All my bought 16 bit and 24 bit files seem properly tagged.

edit: there are only lossless files on my a15 right now.

NWZ-A17 > Fiio X3 (1st gen) > NWZ-X1060 > NWZ-A818 > NW-E507 > iPod classic

Fiio and (unamped)  iPod better sound than an A818 ? No way

That old player is a classic, beautiful designed little device with a very organic sound (bit of hiss, mind). Plenty of power AND a great battery life. I was blown away when it came out, 320aac and with original EX082s' still wonderful.

The Fiio's a joke in comparison weighing more than twice as much with a 1/4 of the battery life and I doubt it is much more powerful. So much for progress (about 7 years seperates the two designs) You'd think the Fiio was a decade older !  The iPod great as it needs an amp of at least the same value again to compete.

God I wish I hadn't sold mine. Whatever you do keep yours while it lasts. Would have liked to compare it to the A15. The newer model certainly cant compete in terms of power (thanks Brussels), light weight, compactness and outright build quality.

I think until the A15 came out only the S639 & X1050/1060 compared.

EDIT sorry you did rate iPod lower for sound (obviously higher capacity)

yes from left to right
dt880smile.png
left the best sound and rightmost the worst in SQ

Yes fiio is a joke and compred to the A17(A15 for you) is an utter joke in termsn of SQ, UI and battery life, simply put floating voices on fiio x3 while my A17 is the most organic accurate thing i've ever heard. Only good of fiios is output power period. But my A17 can become a monster too if i add a quality amp for it

gosh i got confused by < and > Nope actually i¿m correct > is greater than

what you say about A818 is correct, wish sony did the new A10 like that A810's full metal & same D-pad design!

I wonder why sony underutilises the left side of their players, if you see in every walkman after the A810's the left has been never filled with buttons or slots

It also had the hold button on the back. Its only flaw; you had to take it out of its case to activate !

I have a question for you guys.

How safe is the volume of the A17 (international version) at 07 to 10? for big headphones and in-ears, that represents between 23 to 33% of total volume, I have weird loud tinnitus on my right ear and left erar is fine tough

I was prematurely born, lost vision on the left eye (good ear) side and i was detected in Hamburg Germany i am infected with Hepatitis-C(just the elisa testing) because blood transfunsion as a baby (this was confirmed by a mexican infectologist), because i read somewhere HCV patients may have tinnitus

Anyone has an idea how can I convert from "negative" dB values to positive ones?

 to this

I explain how I do it http://www.head-fi.org/t/762787/measuring-output-of-iems#post_11508108
but it really depends on what tools you have at your disposal.

maybe you'd find something interesting about tinnitus here http://www.head-fi.org/t/758167/tinnitus
I think the general good idea is to go see an audiologist. and just as important as how loud, check how long you spend with music or other loud sounds.
I have a very small tinnitus that goes loud when I fall asleep with music, when I spend like 15hours with headphones (rare, but it does happen).
and also something I just noticed recently, when I go running with music. but not so much when listening to audiobooks???? I'm guessing somebody speaking represents a lot less energy than music and has a lot more silences, but it was kind of a surprise.
