Exactly...this is what i did... i plugged it once , it was so much hiss and i did not persist because i realized something was wrong, either with my unit or with the adaptor...please enlighten me :)
you can use a balanced headphone in a unbalanced socket with a adapter, not the other way around, you can also damage you DAP。

While you can use an adapter to connect an unbalanced output with balanced headphones, you shouldn't do the reverse. Off course this will add a lot of noise to the signal, but you can also short the circuit and damage the source.

How could i know if i damaged mine? I just pluggled it for a few seconds... it still works as output but with much hum...

Who exactly sells 3.5mm SE female to 4.4mm Bal male adapters?! If such a company exists, shame on them!

Please post a picture of the adapted you used, next to the (unplugged) cable you used it with.

The picture
So I guess you bought the last one from this: link to aliexpress post.

Looks quite bad to be honest. No one here will probably be able to tell you what protections the zx300 has for short circuiting the balanced connection (or what the wiring in that adapter is like - one would think it's the two Bal grounds connected to the SE ground, but who the hell knows), but it's clear that you did short circuit the Bal output of your zx300, which isn't good. I would contact Sony for repair service.

Btw, that adapter would only be a valid electrical component if plugged into another adapter that converted back to a SE jack... which isn't a very likely use case.

I hope it is not destroyed...is it possible to be damaged although it still has output , even with hiss ?

It it sounds fine when you get your balanced cable then it's probably fine. It shouldn't hiss with a balanced cable (at least not that much even if you have very sensitive iems/headphones)

I thought you said you were hearing clicks and pops, or was that someone else? If it sounds fine, I wouldn't worry about it.

The SE and Bal outputs are supposed to be 2 different analog circuit boards (someone fact check me on this) so, once you get your 4.4 cable, if both outputs sound similar when volume matched (if anything, the 4.4 should sound better), then there's probably no damage.

I have the iFi xDSD and it has a 3.5mm balanced output (doubles as a standard 3.5mm) - perhaps the adapter was intended for someone with a 3.5mm balanced cable intending to use a 4.4mm device. I have an adapter that does the opposite as all my cables are 4.4mm.
