Sony MDR-EX600: Impressions Thread
Jun 18, 2011 at 6:48 PM Post #166 of 1,311
Woohoo!  Got my 600 today.  When I first listen to them, I thought something was missing.  That was out of my Audinst though,  then I plugged it to my tube amp.  Just like how I remembered the 1000, wide sound stage and smooth sound like my full sized can(HD650).  I guess, these need more power to shine?  Does it have to do with it having a large dynamic drivers?  Which perplexes me is that, it sounds great out of a tube amp.  Very snappy and bass has much more quantity and quality, and vocals sound smoother.  Too bad I can't do side by side comparason with 1000.  I think these are worth what I paid for compared to the higher priced 1000 IMO.

Many thanks to 3602 for finding this gem.

Line out or heaphone out?  Want me to source it to my tube amp, instead of my Audinst?  I think it is the amp that makes the difference.  I don't think source is going to change the sound much, not enough that I will notice.  I never really was a fan of the line out of Sflo2.

You want me to do lineout to my CMOY?

I don't like the LO either... until I discovered the EX700 has a good synergy with it, and the strange "user eq" becomes useful, because you can adjust the 1kHz and 6kHz sectors, a funny coincidence because they are the important parts of the eq on the EX700 FR you have to adjust to make it sound good, after decreasing 1kHz -4, and 6kHz +2, using LO, I corrected the faults in the EX700, harshness is gone, clarity and soundstage slightly improved, I'm curious if the EX600 reacts like this as well.

A few days ago I was trying to fix the EX700 playing with 6kHz and 9kHz, well... yesterday I discovered the harshness is somewhere in 1kHz and I was barking up the wrong tree, now I'm very happy with my EX700 and T51 synergy.

The EX700 is that harsh in 1K? God! Are those digits dB's or just some scale numbers?
AFAIK the EX600 does not harshness in 1K. Its harshness seems to be much, much higher. I'm throwing "8K" out here.

Just scale numbers I think, I'm not sure, I can adjust them +12 and -12.

If I put 6kHz on +10, I can still listen to music, it sounds ok, actually the overtones of violin strings sound quite nice! just way too much focus.

If I put 1kHz on +10, it really sounds like violins turn into angry wasps around my head, it's unbearably harsh.

With 1kHz -4, and 6kHz +2, I achieve a clean and sweet sound, more info here http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/539500/review-impressions-of-the-sony-ex1000-versus-the-fx700-gr10-and-e-q5/495#post_7549934

I was curious how the EX600 would react, but I guess Sony already solved the 1kHz harshness with a different driver material or something like that.

so can anyone compare the ex600 to its competitors, price-wise? off the top of my head, theres definitely the gr07,re262,tf10(maybe) and anything within $150.

right now i'm just confused. i was all set on letting my sister who is in new york order the gr07 for me once they were available on lendmeurears, and once i clicked
on this ex600 thread and found out price was 150ish as well, all hell broke loose!

build quality is more important than isolation for me right now. i came from the IE8 and that was ok for me. SQ is the most important

all this is assuming my sister wouldnt flip out on the prices of these... well, theres always my backup plan, the sunrise xcape impressive edition. at least thats like half the price hehe

ahh I'm still trying to decide whether to get these or the MDR7550. The 7550s have worse cables it seems. The L plug looks like the generic sony L plug from several of their lower end IEMs that I have broken before...

The 7550 is supposedly "Pro" so it may enjoy better or worse after-sales support. Seriously. In Quebec a Pro Sony product gets worse support as to my five freaking weeks of PCM-D50 repair of replacing a LED! Well two. You know what the did? Replaced one of the mics and the Canadian System Board with a Jap one! Now it can't display my éèä things! And scratched the paint and somehow gotten that paint inside my screen! And a cammed-out Philips that I can't turn so I can't retrieve said shard of paint! And worse of all the LED was NOT repaired!

Anyway. I guess this is a good time where that extended service thing actually comes in handy.
