Z1r is even bigger, I went to a z1r launch event in china, I have seen people not being able to keep z1r in their ears. Z1r doesn't have any mojor flaws in terms of sound, but the fit would be a problem for some and it would be a dealbreaker.
The M9 was so damn comfortable, and sounded so damn good, I found it difficult to return it. I ended up returning it, in hopes that the IER-Z1R would have an even better sound, and I was willing to pay for it (sony has won me over with the WM1Z and the M9). So far, with 3hrs on the IER-Z1R, I am disappointed with the fit and find that it starts to bother my ears. I normally use the large ear tips (M9 and Tia Fourte), but decided to downsize to the medium, to see if that helps.
Does anyone else have any suggestions, or have a similar opinion?
Neither do I. There's certainly something artificial going on in 1Z's midrange I'll give you that. It pushes the near instruments closer to the front and the distant instruments further to the back, in an artificial yet additive way. I can hear it with speakers too. Never heard anything like it even on the absolute highest end desktop amps and dacs. So it's incorrect, but sounds really good.
1Z yes, it's somewhat of an entirely unique sound. It is unique not in the dimension of SQ or signature, but in some other dimension I described above.
Z1R no, one can still describe it as "XXX with a tad less misbass" or "YYY with a more polished treble" or "ZZZ with a larger soundstage".

After careful consideration I must suggest that anyone on the edge of upgrading from the 1A to 1Z should instead try the IER-Z1R and 1A combination. In 4.4mm balanced mode with stock cable the joining brings most of the 1Z magic to the table. In some aspects it's even a better combination than the IER-Z1R and 1Z combination. Obviously this depends on desired sound signature and how the IER-Z1R IEMs fit.
This is really an amazing interview! I think I am only getting 90% through Google translator, but even that much is stunning. It shows why larger companies with such a large pool of engineering talent and resources can produce such superior products (when inclined). I am anxiously awaiting my pre-order....!

Not the video, read the interview on the link above, pretty amazing. I have to admit I am impressed by great R&D, but will withhold judgement until I hear the iems.
