Denon D2000.

Not overrated because there isn't much hype and they sound damn good.

Eh, it seems like 75% of the reviews I read about them on here are less than happy with their overall performance.

Everyone has different ears.

I haven't heard them. I'd like to. But there's plenty of hype for them. Not as much anymore, I don't think, but they're prey to the same that everything else around here is. Whether or not that's deserved depends on the listener.

I'd say go for the 780. They fold up, so if you need it, it works. It's just a hassle to walk with. They isolate more than most, too.

Thanks a whole bunch man

Don't judge them quickly. They really do need burn-in time. I personally am not fond of the 780s stock but after recabling - whoever does it - they become much more listenable IMO.

I think the Denon D2000 are worlds better than the HFI 780. But they are not portable, and they are more expensive.

Does anyone here own D2000 and HFI-780?
Do you think HFI-780 is a worthy upgrade over D2000 or slightly degrade?

I've heard both extensively and agree with Skylab. The D2000s are much more refined and offer better SQ across the board. I tag the 780s as a good fun 'phone.

I would definitely say a downgrade. I've had a D2000 here twice for several weeks - it's a better all around can than the 780 for sure.

Is that comparing a stock D2000 to a stock 780? Or would say, the S2 Recable bring it up to par with the D2000?

I just finished my speaker rig and I need to pick up a good closed can for when I need to keep the noise down. I've already owned a ALO-780J, but depending on your opinion, I might give the D2000 a try(over a S2 Recabled 780, about the same price).

Edit: Slightly off topic here, but do the D2000 require a decent source/amp? Right now all I have is a Zero DAC/Amp or the Headphone out on my Receiver(Onkyo SR505).

I have heard the D2000 stock AND APS recabled, and I have heard the HFI 780 stock AND S2, ALO, and APS recabled. The 780 never attains the same overall level of performance of even the stock D2000, IMO. Again, it's much cheaper and it's more portable, but the D2000 is the better overall can to be sure, and in pretty much every dimension.

How about in the speed department - how do the D2000s do with extremely fast/heavy metal?
