Agreed, I don't understand why manufacturers spend so much R&D on aesthetics, and then have something that looks like an alien communicator when it's placed on the head.

Is it? The SRH-1540 looks much more alien-like on Jude's head than the SRH-940 on my head.

It's because the earpads on the srh1540 is so very fat and deep.

The srh940 is a fine sounding headphone and it can be even better with this mod:

Great. Exactly what I think.(maybe exclude Fostex TH600 and 900 though).

I understand your worries. Before you drill, just pull off the pads, take out the two screws in each cup and open them up.

How do they compare to TH600?

They are very different from SRH940. TH600 is ultra liquid and bassy while SRH940 is cold and analytical. I haven't heard much closed back as detailed as SRH940, but TH600 is even more detailed.

The driver plate easily comes off with 3 screws. Then you can clean the area behind the driver.
